Default T206 writing question

Sometimes you just wanna slap the kid and take away his pen. I guess I wouldn't have this if it wasn't written on, would you rule this out because of the writing?

I think the writing is terrific! Great card you have there.

I'm a big Joss fan as he pitched for Wayland Academy in high school - private school in my home town and grew up a few miles from my family home.

Several towns in Wisconsin lay claim to Joss storied pitching prowess.

I absolutely love those Joss's noting he passed. I think it adds so much character to a card...knowing it was written during the period. I targeted this Chance, specifically b/c of the writing on the back. 1) it's cool that someone took the time to do it way back when...and 2) it made it more affordable.

I agree. It is as if the owner of the card was honoring the legendary Joss by turning it into a memorial card.

There is a full Wikipedia entry for the Addie Joss Benefit Game for those who want to learn more about how beloved Joss was by his fellow players.

Had to laugh at the "now dead" caption as if whoever wrote it might forget. BTW I think it's a great looking card.

I like period writing and backstamps, you have to remember for the longest time these cards had no value other than flipping against a wall or putting them in your bike spokes.

Like many, I did this with my Topps cards when I was a kid. However, given the small size of the T206s, I doubt that many were flipped against walls or put in bike spokes.

Personally love time period writing. Gives me a sense of nostalgia, thinking of some youngster looking and loving the cards. Likely something that will not be replicated in today’s technological world.
Nice Joss!

I wasn’t aware that Hoffman died young. I ended up reading his SABR bio…another excellent article:

It is always nice to have personal stats on the card.

Brian (no longer mine)...I have a feeling that Rabbit was shorter)

There's a photo that's been posted on this sub of a couple of ratty kids with their T206's spread out on the street with smiles of pride on their faces. There was a West Coast find of cards that had 10 year old kid history written all over them.

For me this hobby has always been chasing the magic of discovering baseball cards as a 10 year old kid. Pure, innocent, and genuine. Good stuff.

Thanks for the nice words and great comps! I have a real small Joss collection and I was a little nervous that this card was worthless. At least my wife can sell it someday (not for much) instead of mixing it in with the beanie babies!

It's a great Joss and the writing doesn't bother me at all. I'd love to own it myself.

Not a T206, and more of an impression than “writing,” but I’m sensing a theme and potential collecting focus here.
