Yup.... I agree cloth is the right term for it.

Look very closely.... is it comprised of thousands of tiny threads compressed together?

Mike is there any chance that you could post a close up photo of the material. For those of us who haven't had that pennant, It'd be great to see what it's like.

I think really the key feature here is that these "cloth" pennants feature a woven fabric, as seen in this close-up photo; whereas the traditional pennant features a felted fabric.

Felted fabrics aren't woven; rather, they're made by taking millions of wool or polyester fibers, rolling them flat under great pressure, then curing the flattened result with a heat or water treatment to bind everything in place.

That's why, if you examine an old felt pennant up close, its composition would look random--nothing like these woven ones.

That's also why, when you cut woven fabric, the threads along the leading edge quickly loosen (because the interlocking of the threads has been broken, which is what binds that type of material together), leading to frayed edges. That doesn't happen with felted fabric.

Cloth > Felt in my opinion

Love the look of a smooth, unfaded 1950s cloth pennant. Also harder to find without paint cracking.

Now the question is … when were the first cloth pennants made? The 1954 WS pennant made by the mystery NYC area company seems to be the oldest dated cloth pennant. I also have a 3/4 Browns Keezer in cloth …

Which 1954 WS pennant, featuring “my” team, are you referencing?

Here are two recent pickups. I'm generally mixed on autographed pennants, but like Vida Blue on the Giants. He was one of their best players when I first became a fan. The Bees pennant is from 1984, which I can tell because it is signed by a future Japanese HOFer (Kim Kudoh). I've posted about these Bees teams elsewhere, I think. In a nutshell, they were horrible, but they had a bunch of players who went on to play for the Seibu Lions, and they became a powerhouse in Japan. Kind of cool.

I have a few versions of the Giants pennant. This happens to be the first with a white spine... but I really liked the Vida Blue addition (and thanks to Erik for making this one available to me).

As Rob and Erik already know, the pennant also came with this pennant-shaped menu, which clearly identifies the Giants as the rightful 1979 World Champions.

Really nice Giants pennant. That has to be a tough one to find. They finished 20 games under .500 and in 4th place so wishful thinking I guess.

Well, if Oooribay doesn't have it, you know it is tough to find.

This cloth Oilers just arrived. I have 2 or 3 copies of this, but they are all somewhat browned due to age. This one is blue as can be. My picture doesn't do it justice. And, related to our discussion about cloth/woven pennants... one easy way to tell us to hold them up to the light.

I know Greg likes cloth pennants. Waiting for him to start on a single bar cloth run : )

Strangely I can’t find a pic anywhere but it is the ‘54 version of this pennant, clearly same company

Love that. I picked up this 1976 ASG pennant yesterday but I'd rather have that lot of 57's.

The mini of that Packers pennant just sold for about $800. Wonder how much a full size would cost?

That series of mini pennants is the only one remotely interesting to me and judging from the prices, I'm not the only one.

So did I steal mine for under $100 or was the recent one on Ebay an aberration? Or is orange just a rarer color?

You stole it! The Cowboys sold for almost as much as the Packers and the Raiders broke $500. Jets $300. It's a desirable set. Unfortunately, the seller had all the auctions ending during the Super Bowl and I got shut out.

Feel bad? I've been on cloud 10 for the past 48 hours. I'd gladly trade all my pennants for a Rams Super Bowl victory...but luckily I didn't have to.

A Giants collecting buddy came over a couple of days ago. He had this 3/4 size, spineless pennant. Up until recently I had never seen the LH batter and bridge pennant in a 3/4 size. This one is even smaller than the one I had. Stitch holes confirm that it used to have a spine. My buddy is not really a "pennant guy." Friend that I am, I gave him ten bucks for it.

I know we all have a disdain for minis, but this photo was identified as a "1952 Topps display." What Giants pennant is this (right side)? The graphics look kind of similar to this orange one.

Is that a vintage photo or a modern recreation of a topps display? I never envisioned a store or vendor in 1952 having that many boxes of cards for sale. Where would he be selling those?

I believe it’s a vintage photo. It came off the Keyman website.

Great photo! Funny, I always thought these pennants were part of a promo set offered by Bazooka gum--not Topps.

By the 1960s there was a similar promo set offered by Bazooka; however, that set had "Bazooka" inscribed on the front.

Here's the Brooklyn one seen in your picture, up close, measuring about 14" in length.

Cool! Bazooka was owned by Topps (I think).

Just noticed that the 49ers miner on the Keezer mini pennant is very similar to this transfer decal, suggesting that Keezer made it too?

What all/else did Keezer make?

What all/else did Keezer make?
In addition to full and mini size felt pennants, Keezer also manufactured felt emblems, available for iron-on transfers to caps or shirts. By the 1960s, they were involved in sportswear, mostly shirts and sweatshirts.

Loving the Keezer decal.

On the theme of smaller pennants here's a few 3/4 size pennants that arrived this week.
  • The DiMaggio is missing the tip and has a couple of pin holes, but otherwise is pretty sharp.
  • The Banks has a little bit of foxing on the photo. I'm not sure if the foxing can be cleaned.
  • I think the 1930s Cubs in pretty rare.

Default ca. 1909 B/W image of a San Francisco college dorm room

I think I found a picture of Marc's college bedroom online....

The Gibson Girls were a nice touch, Marc!

How did you know that I went to Girl's High?

Lots of cool stuff in the pic. I've never seen the Santa Clara pennant on the wall, or the blanket on the bed. Would love to find them. There is also a Santa Clara vs. St. Mary's football program on the back wall, also from 1909.

The top Giants pennant is one of the first ones I purchased when I started collecting pennants. Every time I see one of these come up for auction, I never even really bother to look at it, because I already have it. I noticed the bottom one on ebay a few weeks ago. It has much better graphics (you can actually see facial features), so I bought it.

I wonder if the better graphics have to do with the nicer one using better materials, or if the screens actually get worn over time (like a sculpture mold) and lose detail?

Nice. But they seem to be different screens. Look at the top of the bridge.

You must have been really good at where's Waldo

Everything else about the pennant is so similar. I suppose the screen was copied at some point? And lost some detail? Everything else in the image lost definition, but that piece at the top pf the bridge is simply gone.

Here are three slightly different versions I picked up this past month. Yes, I'm that bored, waiting for something really cool to show up.

Even the panel underneath is different … one has four openings the other has six

Anyone want to try to name the different paint colors in the three pennants?
