Default Show Off Your Advertising Signs

One of the things I love looking at is advertising signs or posters featuring our favorite sports stars. I would love to pick up a few Yankees pieces one day, but don't know how to go about grabbing one, where to get the or how to tell a repo from a real sign.

That said, post what you all have. Vintage, modern everything in between. Baseball, football, hockey, basketball. Please post them here.

This may be slightly O/T, but here is a wood stadium vendor sign.

Great signs guys.

Funny, I always thought the Giants were on WOR-TV, channel 9 here in NYC. Always thought WPIX was exclusive to the Yankees back in the days. You learn something new everyday.

Default Circa 1939-1940 Cincinnati Reds Bruck Beer Poster with Vander Meer

One of my favorite pieces that I don't currently have displayed is this Bruck's Beer advertising poster with Johnny Vander Meer.

I have been told that a former employee of Bruck's saved this poster after it had been on display somewhere in Cincinnati. Bruck's Beer was apparently one of the stadium advertisers at now defunct Crosley Field for many years. This was a pickup at The National a few years ago and it came from the long-time outstanding Cincinnati Reds collection of Steve Wolter (Sports Investments).
Dimensions of the poster is 18" x 24"

That's a great piece, Scott...

I was under-bidder on a similar one over 10 years ago.... and have not seen one since. It was NRMT, amazingly. I sure wish (in retrospect) that I pursued it more aggressively.

Great posts by all.... I think maybe Bob should have his own thread, though

Default Here's a few

In the world of antique advertising signs porcelain is sort of king...Over the last five or so years I've developed a taste for them...only thing is antique sports related signs are rare to begin with...but porcelain ones hardly exist they're so few...However the Lord blessed me and I've gotten the ones below...I found that Slazengers’ Tennis Racquets one on an Australian website...Likely produced in England...I was able to date it to about 1903 based on the racquet...on really heavy metal plate...

 photo Tennis Bowling Billiards_zpsmcg0cxpv.jpg

 photo SlazengerTennisSign29x19inch_zpsibioom9n.jpg

 photo harvard cigars sign CH_zpsqtnsyov8.jpg

I'm pretty proud of this Collegian Clothes sign below...just got it last winter...advertising signs featuring track are very rare...So when I spotted it in a brick and mortar auction I was all over it...bid live by phone...the guy on the other end was taken back the bidding kept going up...I think he thought it would go for nothing...I kind of thought so too but somebody else spotted it and I had to pay real money...Auction house told me it had been found behind a framed picture....that explained why it was nice and bright...though slightly trimmed...

 photo Collegian Clothes 28x22_zpsrxsdw3rb.jpg

http://www.sportsantiques.com/rosebowl6_13_10.htm
The Kuppenheimer Clothes one below was a great find I made years ago at the Rose Bowl flea...rowing signs very tough...and it's by Leyendecker...not signed but I know his work a mile away...picked it up with three other Leyendecker signs...still gotta get it fixed and framed...

 photo PICT7275_1600x1200_zpse2qfsnpq.jpg

http://www.sportsantiques.com/latestacquistions.htm
Picked up this Regal Pale Beer sign at the monthly Sacramento antiques fair...turned out the seller got it at Alameda the week before...I missed it there...said a guy was selling off a bunch of beer stuff and was getting mobbed and he grabbed this...One of my favorite boxing signs...

Carlton...

That Ratsch Peerless Glass Sign is off the charts, in terms of eye appeal. Can't even think of an adjective worthy of describing it. Did you get that at one of the Nationals?

Incredible stuff!

Thanks guys for the positive comments. And I agree this is a great thread and really enjoy seeing it all.

Carlton you are correct about porcelain sports signs being rare. I should have previously mentioned it in case it wasn't seen by others when you originally posted http://sportsantiques.com/spalding_bb_flange.htm about the porcelain Spalding baseball sign I picked up. If I'm not mistaken it's the only porcelain baseball related sign that I am aware of. Gas and oil signs, of which I also collect, were more commonly made of porcelain to withstand outdoor elements.

The Old Gold Sign here is new old stock as the cardboard stand up on the back is still flat on the reverse.

Thanks all for your approval of the Ratch Peerless...Got it at the 2011 National from Kanuit...who got it from the late Tony Bussineau...Yeah it's not mint by any means...It looks like some kid scratched the reverse paint to appear they are smoking...fortunately it's faint and doesn't effect it too much...see link above for it and everything I got that show...

Default DIZZY Dean

In about 1977 I was on vacation in Alabama with my Grandfather we were getting stuff for a Cookout and I saw this. Dropped it in a plastic bag when we finished and just recently opened it up.

That's awesome you had the frame of mind to preserve that Dizzy bag! I'm currently avoiding the chaos of the prepping going on for my sister's 21st birthday party, so here are some more...

Like what you've posted. I especially like the Roy White ad piece. Looks like you have some other ad items; please post them up if you have an opportunity.

Default Ad Signs

Derek,

Once again some great stuff. The Spalding Advisory Staff piece pictures some real talent. Bet the Bucs fans will love that Iron City item (shoot I like it and I'm not even a Pirates fan). Rawlings item; just awesome!

I have a Rawlings sign I've had forever that doesn't really go with my collecting interests, but just like it for some reason. Of course I'd trade for an interesting O's item Ha!

Have fun at your sisters party...

These pieces bring back some wonderful childhood memories of the late 70's Yankees teams I grew up watching and loving.

I remember seeing that ad in my Burger King and I used to snatch up cards upon every visit. That helped intensify my love for baseball cards. Baseball cards and french fries

Any Reggie piece is one that opens my eye. I do hope to one day own a=some of the Reggie Bar ads.

That Roy White piece is spectacular!

Mike
