Default M128 1917 National Police Gazette Thorpe...and card

An M128 1917 National Police Gazette Jim Thorpe (12"x17") without creases. And the corresponding 1915 W-unc card (1 5/8" x 2 1/2"),with creases to go with it....just thought I would share. If anyone has any other 1915 W-Uncs to share I would enjoy seeing them.

Leon THAT is a great W Unc. Cool pose. I Like the card waaay more than the police gazette (I don't like cops). Do you know if that Thorpe image is used on other cards? Dave.

Hi David
I think the image might be used on a new card but not sure. I don't believe it's on any other pre-war card. A few years later I am still surprised it didn't sell for more than it did. This was one of those you don't expect to win and you do.

Is it possible that Police Gazette put out the W-UNC. set as well?

Lipset theorized the 1915 W-uncs were some kind of candy card. He sold a large batch of them, which is where the Thorpe came from, several years ago and many of them had Police Gazette photos used. I don't recall if any of the ones before that group had been associated with the magazine. This is still a hobby mystery. The Phili collage looking card has a Gazette photo (see below) as well as this Matty does. The Matty- Gazette is dated 1901 which makes this card have a rookie photo of Matty!! Only the Phili team standing/sitting card has others of it known, the other 3 are uniquely known as of now.

Leon,

Your collection continues to amaze. The seemingly endless number of scans begs the question. Have you your collection out on display? It must dominate your house, not just one room, if you do. Sadly,I suspect that in this world that we live in that you probably are forced to incorporate a safe or a safety deposit box or both. Your collection is World Class.

Thanks for the kind words. The collection is a labor of love. Only my less valuable cards and items are on display in my home office. The rest are off premises for security reasons. That being said, almost 98% of it is on my website, on virtual display, under the personal collection.... www.luckeycards.com

Is it safe to say that your extensive collection of 'sizing' quarters and halves are located off premises as well?

I have 1 quarter and 1 half. They are on my desk at the ready!!

And another M128 w/card. All I need is the Matty to finish them up. All in due time...

Is that Pennock in the top row, between Barry and Strunk? Sure looks like him. That would make 6 HOFers. Nice.

EDITED TO ADD: oops, seems it's right there to read for those with normal eyesight. Pennock it is.
