Default Show Your Beavers

Next week I am heading down to the PCL All-Star game in Portland. Which got me thinking about Portland’s great baseball history and some of the great vintage ballplayers who played for them like Stan Coveleski, Dave Bancoft, Harry Heilmann, Heinie Manush, Jim Thorpe, Mickey Cochrane and of course Satchel Paige. So in honor of Portland, lets see those vintage PCL Beavers.

Nice thread, Leon. Thanks for starting it...

Steve, I'd not seen that card of Seaton, that's a great card!!!

The caption says McCredie, Mgr., Captl, Port.

So who is he??

SABR's minor league site says William H. McCreedie managed Portland, 1905-1917, 1919-1921, & 1934, with other places in between. But McCreedie didn't play anywhere. And, the site says that Walter Henry "Judge" McCredie played at Portland 1904-1913, 1916 & 1917. Walt was in the majors at Brooklyn in 1903, hit .324. Dennis Snelling's PCL book has the manager as W. McCreedie. On page 90 of Fred W. Lange's History of Baseball in California and Pacific Coast Leagues he shows Portland's right fielder as Walter McCreedie. That's with 2 e's. (I've yet to read this book through, I now see Lange mentions 3 Zamloch brothers, Claud, Carl, and Archie... I thought there was but one, I have to read this book.) Finally, in the Zingg and Medeiros book, Runs, Hits, and an Era, on page 26 they mention "player - manager Walter McCredie" and on page 24 "Portland owner Judge W.W. McCredie..."

So is there an extra 'e' there, are they different folks, are they the same guy? Who's on the card?

I want to think that the owner was some guy "Judge W.W. McCredie; and that the player was Walter or Walt McCreedie, that he's the guy on the card, and the card has omitted one of the 'e's.... but I can be convinced otherwise.

Rhett, those are very nice 1913 ZeeNuts, a difficult year...

Ted Z, you posted your Bowman card of Harvey Storey before I dug out the Storey card you so kindly sold me...

And that's a nice looking Mono.

Here are a few more Portland cards...

It's funny how you never seem to see the 1911 Zeenut Tom Seaton for sale but when you do find one, they are typically in fairly crappy shape. Also interesting that his top and bottom borders are much smaller than those of other 1911's(the following 2 pics are taken at roughly actual size). Regardless, it is one of my favorite 1911's in the set (along with the Halla)...

Default e99

I have this E99 that hasn't been shown...and a fistfull of tix to this year's version in PGE Park that I got from work.
I saw three games in a row, July 4,5,6 against Colorado Sky Sox.
Portland Baseball is alive and well ( good crowds!). For the visiting team I got to see Adam Eaton pitch to Sal Fasano, and Eric Young Jr. show his considerable talent all while the Beavs took 2 of 3 which some tough pitching of their own, Tim Stauffer's 5 2/3 perfect game included.
I'll be attending more games this summer...but I haven't found any E99s under the seat.
