I came within a hair of bidding on numerous occasion. But thought it was most likely Cricket... The way he's holding the ball, the style of long trousers, and the fact that it's German-made are the major factors which led me to that conclusion.

If I am wrong, I will deeply regret it.... it was offered at an insanely low price.

Eager to hear others' thoughts.... Carlton??

Kevin I saw this piece and passed because I thought it was more likely a cricket bowler than a baseball pitcher. It's a nice form and well executed, but this being from an era where gloves had been introduced and the fact that virtually all of the early baseball statues and figurals I've seen feature uniformed players left me and others skeptical. You got it for a great price however

My first thought also is that it's a cricket bowler. How are the seams on the ball arranged if you can tell? That may help settle whether it's cricket or baseball.

The Cap and Jersey actually look strikingly close to the Muller Statues (pics below...) It was the pants that threw me off most. Plus, the way he grips the ball just looks more like Cricket than Baseball. If it was American-made (and not German), I would've probably chanced it!

Default Baseball Pitcher Statue

I would agree with the idea that it is a cricket statue. When you compare the Mueller pitcher statue to this statue the underhand pitching pose of the Mueller is classic of the 1860's period. Overhand pitching did not occur in baseball until 1884. If the statue was baseball, then the pitcher would be wearing knicker style pants, not long pants.
Respectfully submitted,
John
