Default Question About Yankee Stadium Chairs

Posted By: Ben

My grandfather purchased a chair from Yankee Stadium when they did the renovations in the 70's. It has a curved back. I was wondering if this type of chair was there in 1923 or was added later (1940's or so). I think I once read that the original '23 chairs all had straight backs. I will try to post a pic later. Any info is appreciated.

The original 1923 seats all had straight backs. The box seats, or, as they were called "box chairs," were actual chairs--you can see them in many pictures of the Stadium in the 1920s. Those chairs were eventually replaced by the curved-back seats.

(Seats are permanently mounted, while chairs are free to be moved around.)

Sarno,

Steiner has the exclusive on every last crumb of Yankee Stadium as far as I know. Best to let all the over-spenders empty their wallets first and wait a little bit for something to come up on the secondary market. Either that or wait until Steiner (undoubtedly) wholesales remaining inventory.

Default Question About Yankee Stadium Chairs

As I said, patience will be your best bet in this case. I mean, we're talking about a whole stadium here! This material will permanently flood the market ad nauseum. All I can think of are "Chunks that Ruth Built" insert cards, and can't help but envisioning those tacky 1"X1" swatches affixed to cards saying "Ringo Slept Here". A piece of Ebbets Field, Hilltop Park, etc. would be a real treasure. To me, there's just no beauty in numbers. I'd want to pick up something unique if I were in the market for a piece of Yankee Stadium--something along the lines of that large letter "N" that David owns.

Default Question About Yankee Stadium Chairs

Hey, Jodi--it's an "M."

Man, would I love to own a piece of Hilltop Park! I've got ticket stubs and programs, but I have never even heard of an actual part of the park itself. It was torn down in 1914.

BTW, NYC owns the Stadium, and the City has not yet decided who will be granted the rights to sell off the pieces. It isn't necessarily Steiner--although they are in the running.

There was a nice article on the selling of the Stadium in New York magazine a few weeks ago.

"N", "M"--tonato, tomato.

I had heard the Steiner story as far back as nearly two years ago.

Here's another source for old Stadium memorabilia, although the prices aren't much better than Steiner.

Ben,
From this site you can see the difference between the 1920's seats and the 1940's ones.

Try contacting Paul Ferrante at Baseballjourney@aol.com. He's written a number of articles for SCD.

Default Question About Yankee Stadium Chairs

I have a straight backed Yankee stadium seat from the 1970s renovation. My brother actually picked it up at a yard sale years ago. It was in pieces in a box but was all there, just needed a welding repair. He paid $15 for it. I remember that they sold the seats at a local department store. I think it was E.J Korvettes. The cost was $7.50 plus two Winston box tops.

Tom,

Korvette's is correct. And $7.50 is correct, but you actually needed 5, empty, Winston, crush-proof boxes!

(That's where I got mine, and no, I didn't remember the details, but that site I linked above actually has the original ad for sale. I'd love to have one, but not at $750!)
