At least the auction house didn't give you that answer!

I picked this up at the recent White Plains show. From what we can tell, it is a 1953 signature.

Wow! I was the underbidder on that piece. It certainly would have been a great piece to display. Glad you got your money back.

Jimmy, small world. At least it saved you from alot of trouble if you had won it. The auction house did at least issue me a refund check right there at the National and even refunded the money I spent to have it authenticated. Too bad as it was a cool item but both PSA/DNA and Jimmy Spence both agreed that is wasn't genuine.

Default More of the Mick...

A 1951 vintage TYPE III wirephoto from Mickey's debut game at Yankee Stadium.

DiMaggioMantle.jpg

Vintage original TYPE I photograph from late Sept. 1956 when Williams was still leading Mantle in the race for the batting title. Mick of course would come back to win the title and the Triple Crown.

I am guessing this is one of the only Basketballs Mantle signed :-D

.

To bad the last owner got Willis Reed and Brad Van Pelt to sign it as well.

Jesh no respect for the Mick.

Picked up this magazine at Barnes & Noble yesterday. Not a bad rundown of Mantle related material and noteworthy for its inclusion of three works by our resident prodigy, Master Kreindler.

Ted,

How did you arrive at 1953 as the date of the Mantle page? I have to disagree--in your favor, judging by signature style, that sig dates to no later than 1952. This style was employed by Mantle during his first two MLB seasons.

Jodi,

The 1953 date is what I was told by the dealer whom sold it to me. He said he was not 100% sure, he was going by the other autographs in the same album.

Thank you for pointing out the correct years, I never would have known otherwise.

Steve

Steve,

If possible, perhaps you can ask that dealer if he owned/owns the rest of the autograph book that the Mantle came out of. The other players who signed the book might be better able to pinpoint the year. After all, a rookie-year Mantle is a much nicer acquisition than a 1952! Mick changed his signing style 5-6 times during the 1950's alone!

I wish I could go back and ask him about the rest. But I picked it up at the White Plains show back in August when my wife and I were on vacation in NYC.

He had a large collection of albums he had bought and was selling the autographs off piece by piece. I know he had cut out quite a few of the autograph pages and had them for sale at the show.

I had no idea that Mantle changed his autograph so much. I know the more common one and I had seen one other similar to this on Antiques Road Show. Is there any way to tell that would lean this to 1951 instead of 1952 without having the rest of the album?

I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me. This is actually very exciting thinking I may possibly have a rookie Mantle autograph!

There is no way to differentiate without gathering more information, so I guess it will always remain a "circa 1951-52" example. Some people do not like using the "circa" qualifier, but there's really no other option in the case of this piece.

This might be the coolest (though not the most expensive) lot handled by Heritage Auctions. It sold for $33,460.

Not for nothing Ben, but I LOVE that Mantle GPC. I can imagine the young rookie sitting on the stool in his locker, reading fan mail and just sending his John Hancock to his ever growing legion of excited fans. Maybe something like this...

Hah!! If I were up late signing autographs, then the world would be coming to an end, my friend.

I agree with you on the photo though, it's absolutely killer. I'm actually doing a painting of it as we speak!! It's the first time I've ever tried to tackle a photograph that's been taken with a flash, so I'm trying to figure out the way I want to handle it in the end...hopefully it will yield some good results!

Hey guys, first time in. Did they give you a reason why they thought this mantle was no good. I wouldnt take either of those companies as the final word. I'm curious whether Jodi or Richard have an opinion on this. I would say it's good.

My 3 favorite Mickey pics. Both from Sport magazines.

April 1953
Cover:

Inner page pic:

May 1955

It's so hard to choose the best as Mickey was a very frequent subject in Sport mag, both on covers and inner pics. To see most of them follow link below(I only have up to 1962 covers scanned and up to 1955 inner pics scanned as of now).

I posted a while back but wanted to add this 9 panel exhibit card display section that has the Mick on it...

This proof is from the toppsvault - from the '52 reprint set:

And another example of an exhibit card vending machine display of the Mick:

Last, I showed the Mick card that's in the 50s Mickey Mantle Game - now - here's a game card from the set:

Hey Jimmy,
Great photo. Dig the Mick's Aloha shirt tucked into the Sansabelt slacks. Not necessarily a chick getting look!

Unfortunately, it was short lived. I never got the membership card or any copies of the magazine/catalog they were supposed to create.

I don't know much about it, but here's a Mantle Little League bat that I picked up several years ago.
