Default When is a card's condition too low?

Posted By: identify7

Lets say for an important card.

An example of a low condition card which could be used as a reference is the Radbourne currently offered on eBay.

This card is recognizable regarding:
Card manufacturer
Year of issue
Player portrayed

What more do you really need?

Suppose the reference example was a unique card - would your criteria change?

My rule has always been - would his mother recognize him? Creases, holes, missing borders are ok but as long as the player is recognizable I'm ok with it.

I suspect my standards are lower than most board members.

I recently drew that line just North of this one.

and just South of this one.

Both cards being needed for nearly completed sets.

An E107-III that probably all but redefines the concept of "Poor". But if you know what the card is supposed to look like - then looking at this beat-up example probably makes it a bit easier.

When cards are rare to find in any condition - sometimes you take what you can when you can, not knowing when and if another opportunity may arise.

There's nothing wrong with a filler card. It's a personal choice. If you can live with it then that's great. The Radbourn mentioned is very condition challenged (trimmed, light image, etc). But, if want a card of the pitcher with the most wins in a season and you don't want to spend a grand on it then this could be a low cost alternative. It's still a card, kind of.....

being the annointed King of Crappy Commons around here, my personal criteria is that any damage is ok as long as the name on the card is legible and there is no distracting crease thru the face. The custom die-cuts in my collection are some of my favorite cards.

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.
