If you were given $10,000 and HAD to spend it on vintage cards, what would you buy? It can be an individual card or any combination of cards as long as it adds up to $10,000. Hopefully this one will be interesting!

I would buy the best condition I could find of an N172 '$10,000 Kelly' card.

To answer my own question, I would try to buy all four T206 Ty Cobb cards in EX condition.

That would be more then enough to put together a set of T206 backs with some in fairly good grade.

Really it comes down to 2 choices. Several cards or just one. I always prefer the 1 card route. In that case with $10K it would be something incredibly rare from an unpopular set or semi-rare from a popular one.

So make it the best condition T206 Demmitt or O'Hara St Louis for me.

But considering it further, I guess the real answer would be to choose what would appreciate the most. If I guess right, I can sell it and then pick up my Demmitt or O'Hara later and have some extra.

So the correct answer is non-sports N-cards In EX-MT condition or better.

I'd probably go the smörgåsbord route and try to find worn but presentable examples of type cards such as:

E107 Breisch Williams
N690 Kalamazoo Bats
Just So Tobacco (would have to look like it had been hit by a truck)
T217 Mono cigarettes

I'd put the rest of the money on account, or maybe buy the ceramic dalmatian.

This is a fun one to think about.

Probably like many, my answer to this question will change just about every time it's asked. Most days though, if I had $10K that I HAD to spend on vintage cardboard, I think I'd try to take that money as deep into the 1913 Voskamp set as I could get.

Not sure how far I'd actually make it before my attention got drawn to something else, but I sure would like to add a few more examples to my meagre collection.

Richard.

I'd finish off my T3 and E90-1 HOFer runs, and then get a T227 Cobb, an N172 Clarkson, Kelly, Keefe or Ward, and N28 HOFers until I reached $10K

My first purchase would be an E107 Jimmy Collins (good condition.) I would then put together the PC742-1 Boston Americans Series set in VG condition. Finally, I would grab an M101-4 Joe Wood (with a Morehouse Baking back) in whatever condition the remaining budget would allow.

Paul, I have a memory of an auction recently which featured a signed Cobb T205. Have you ever seen a signed T206?

Leaving out the good-luck-finding-it aspect...

L1 Johnson (saw one at a National about 10 years ago for under a thousand, but beyond my budget at the time)
Any E107 Washington player
Any E105 Washington player
N172 Mack or Hoy
Any N173 Washington player

No particular preference among these; I'd just work on the list until the money was gone.

Bill

that's easy

E121 series of 120 Ruth
T207 vic Saier
T207 Ward Miller
1921 Elmer Miller Koester Bread
E121 series of 120 Lou DeVomer
E121 series of 120 Chas O'Leary

Assuming you could find all of them

Ken

condition not overly important - just something about owning a four base hits metropolitans card - or any FBH for that matter.... Without "found" money it's not in the cards for the near future. I also would like to "cap" my mid-grade N28 set off with a CRISP Anson but have held off pulling the trigger. I even surprise myself with the last choice as the most striking Anson card to me is his N162. Need over desire "-)

I didn't have any bids on anything, but if I read the auction info correctly they are sending/emailing invoices out Monday. BTW, both of those cards are outstanding! Congratulations!

I would buy the remaining 21 cards that I need for my T206 HOFer set, not including Plank and Wagner of course. $10,000 would be just about enough to get all of those in EX to EX-MT condition.

I'm perfectly happy with lower grades so I would focus on getting as many type cards in SGC 10-30 that I can.

I'm surprised this has taken off like it has. So far the answers have been really interesting. Maybe I need to come up with more of these ridiculous hypotheticals. Luckily nobody has noticed that I got the "ridiculous hypothetical quandary of the day" off of a radio show...

Well, not exactly vintage cards but here goes.
1954 Hunter Wiener Stan Musial
1953 Briggs Wiener Mickey Mantle
1953 Briggs Wiener Willie Mays
1954 Esskay Wiener Harry Brecheen

Does anyone have any of these for sale?
