Default Day Late and a $ short / Missed the Boat

I feel I wanted to share some of my experiences, and can't wait to hear some responses from fellow board members on this topic.

How many times have each of us either sold a card that was either flat in value for many years, only to have it skyrocket in price once you got rid of it? Or, happened to pass on purchasing a card at a great price, only to have it become unaffordable?

My experiences:

1. I bought a really nice PSA 4.5 1951 bowman Mantle in a REA auction about 5 years ago. I paid around $3,200 for it. Nice centering and no print lines. A few years ago I decided to re-focus my collection, and try to obtain some more "scarce" issues. The card never moved in value since the time I purchased it, and there was always a ton for sale on ebay, auctions, etc. I sold to card to a fellow board member for around $3,400. Currently, the card in that condition should sell for around $7,200 - oh well.

2. Also, around that time I had a 1984 Star Co. Jordan that I bought in 2006 from Steve Taft for $1,500. It was a SCD 7.5 at the time I bought it, and then it crossed to a BGS 8 - all subs were an 8. I sold it on ebay for $1,750. I couldn't sell this card for anything, but finally someone bought it. Now this same card is around $6,500 - $7,000 or so in a comparable grade.

3. I also wanted to get a Babe Ruth M101-4 rookie, but couldn't afford one when the prices were low, prior to 2008. Now this card is way out of my league.

I'm sure I'm not the only one this has happened to. Feel free to share your stories.

Tony

1915 CJ Joe Jackson

Was on eBay 3 weeks ago... It had been ripped in half and put back together/restored by a professional company.

I got cold feet thinking thinking it might be a fake (it was in a PSA AUT holder)

Went for 4,700,00
I'll never see another one with that eye appeal in my price range.

Still bothers me,
Lol

Seems to happen to me over and over again. One exception. Not baseball, but bought a Tom Brady rookie auto for $1200 2 years ago and sold it right before his suspension was reinstated for $2000. This is one of only a few truly positive returns for me. Usually the other way around

A ton..

1953 Mantle #82 PSA 5...looked like an '8' with the tiniest of spider wrinkles.

1965 Joe Namath rookie PSA 7 - WHEW!

1954 Hank Aaron rookie SGC 7 - see above

those are three monsters I wish I had back.

Sold a PSA 8 Bill Russell rookie about a year ago for $8K, which seemed to be the going rate. Offered it here and elsewhere for months with no takers. Once it sold, there were a few in auctions which PSA 8's (similar centering) sold for north of $20K - $25K.

Insert angry face here.

And if anyone would care to turn back the clock to my BST post last year on this 1987 Jordan PSA 10, I offered it at $1,400 (and sold it after a while with no takers).

Price not edited out here; you can still see my stupid move

In case you're wondering, the last 5 sales of this card in PSA 10 on eBay in 2016 have all been between $5K - $6K.

WTF.

I should have used "DollarShort" as my user name.

Nice!
Is that JJ for sale or just used to further antagonize me?

1. PSA 6 green Cobb I sold for 6k in 2005 only now to see it out of my price range
2. Passed on a PSA 3 T206 Plank for 15k.. I was about 6k short and would have needed to liquidate most of my T206 PSA 7s and some PSA 6 HOFs I had at the time. Sadly I now have none of them

I missed out on this "clementomania" by about 5 hours. I bought a PSA 7 for 5,500 a few months ago because I felt it was under valued. I was feeling pretty good about myself when I accepted an offer over 11k about a week ago as my plan had worked. Not more than 5 hours later pwcc sold a similar but nicer psa 7 for 25k. A couple of days later 8s had went from 60k cards to 125k and 7s had jumped from 10k to 25-30k.

Wow. I haven't really followed the Clemente hysteria, so these numbers are mind-blowing. Question to those who have been in the hobby longer than I have (4 years now): have you ever seen anything like this?

I think a card of this magnitude doubling in value overnight is unprecedented. When I accepted my offer it broke the VCP record and my card wasn't even centered. I obviously had no idea what was about to happen in the next day or two. A change like that lends some credibility to the argument that the market is being manipulated.
