Default W517 Dazzy Vance (No Number)

Posted By: fkw

I went back and looked at some old posts but there really isnt that much info. (one was listed in a 2006 Mastros auction)

I was wondering.... How rare is this Vance No# card?

Compared to the normal Vance card with the number 36.

It still isnt listed in the SCD Standard Catalog.

How many board members own one or have owned one in the past?

Are there any more without the number? (besides Waner and Vance)

I just picked up a Waner and Vance. Ive seen a few Waners but this is only the 2nd Vance Ive seen.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Frank

Apparently, the W517 "mini's" are considerably rarer, across the board, than the regular issue. Don't know if the mini's correspond exactly to the regular issue. Picked up a George Kelly a while back, about which, I posted for info regarding the set.

The minis are much scarcer than the W517. All of the 16 known minis are missing the number. They are actually mini versions of the 1925-31 Exhibit cards and not exact mini copies of the W517's (cropping differences match the Exhibits).

The 2 cards I mention above are the normal size W517-1 not the unnumbered minis (I call W517-2).

I did look at SGC and they list 4 No# Vance's graded including the one I just picked up (compared to 23 graded w/number). I dont think you can use that as a good example of how rare the card is. I think there is a high % of the numbered Vances that havent been graded so you cant really say the unnumbered card is 6 times rarer, IMO.

Frank, I have owned both cards with no # at one time, I kept the Waner (I liked it better) and sold off the Vance. I too have probably seen one or two more Waners without the #, but in all reality they are probably equal in rarity. I have definately seen more of the two players with the # than without. By the way, what color is your Vance, mine was a dark greenish (same color as the Waner below), it could be that the different colors were produced at the same time, and this color had the #'s knocked off. I have seen the original art for these cards, and if I remember right the #'s were merely stickers on the picture (often missing over the years on the art but they left a little mark).

This set (as was described by another poster recently) has many nuances and subtle changes in layout of photo, then there are the cards with plays at the top (only the top cards in the strip of 3), those with the "winning" color stripes on back, and finally the wide variety of colors (the most common being the sepia).

Definatley one of the most interesting of the true "strip cards"
-Rhett

Hi Rhett,
The Vance I just picked up is slightly more blue looking than your Waner but it might be the digital camera picture (I havent received it yet).

The Waner I have is the same color as yours.

Sounds good, I think you are right when you say the Vance and Waner are both about the same scarcity. I would guess maybe just one printing had the number fall off (might all be the same color).

SGC actually doesnt list any Waners graded but lists 4 Vances, yet the Standard Catalog lists the Waner in their checklist and not the Vance.

There are some Waners and Vances that look to be the same color that have the numbers. Leon's website has a good picture of a strip with both on it.

I just ate dinner and everyone else has been sleeping for 5 hours
(Hawaii time)

Getting carried away a little with my googleing..... last post for the night I promise

This page (link below) has images of a B&W Waner (No#) and a Vance (w/#) but the cropping and border line are really different on the Vance (compared to Leon's and others).

Rhett, You were right on the subtle differences between the colors and border line cropping etc. I was trying to see if the number (stickers) was in slightly different spots on the different color variations.

I remember it, but I cant find that post that showed example pics.
