Thanks it is one that doesn't show up on eBay terribly often. This one is the fourth bearing the 1971 Champions text that I have added to my collection. The others are more common. They are the black and white scroll versions and the Three Rivers yellow one. The black scroll version is the most attractive. Other than upgrading this one I have been looking for Steve Blass pennant. I am on the west coast so I'm limited to eBay searches.

Most of the writing did come off. The mustard yellow color is much brighter. However, a majority of the stains remain and are now more visible than ever because of that.

I have to laugh....sorry . I always ask sellers to ship pennants either flat or VERY loosely rolled. I hope your guy at least gave you a $2.32 First a Class rate. I have had fantastic luck with bleach on white pennants. What did you use on yours?

I am also not above ironing pennants. The old (quality wool) ones can take a hot iron. The newer crappy polyesters, I iron under a towel...otherwise, they melt!

I considered bleach but feared that it would cause the yellow to fade. I used a copious amount of spray and wash and a small amount of detergent. I washed it alone using a gentle spin cycle with cold water. I then placed it between linen and used a marble roller to remove the excess water. I used an iron to press and dry it so that it would not lose size when it dried. It was a lot of work for such an inexpensive item.

Often when I sell a pennant, the buyer will be anal about specifying how I pack. Now I understand why.

I'm sure you saw the Red Sox one in the current Huggins & Scott auction....

Yes Rob... first one to surface (that I'm aware of...) So much for the FAO Schwartz/NYC theory

Probably best to discuss in further detail- after the auction!

Which Tri-Cities are those?

Here's a pretty non-thrilling one:

Tacoma Tigers, probably from the teens. Nothing specifically marks it as a baseball pennant but I remember reading somewhere a very convincing argument why this must be a baseball pennant and not for some zoo or tourist attraction.

Nice pennants, Fballguy. I grew up in Ohio (1955-1977) and I have never been aware of the Cleveland Rams!

They started in Cleveland and spent their first 10 years there before becoming the first major professional sports team to move west.

Thnx! Yes 30x12ish. The scan is not the best as the color is deep hunter green felt. I think this is late 30s era...

Unfortunately, I am almost 100% certain that pennant is a 1980s Ebbets Field Flannel repro. It isn't actually a repro since there never were originals of these. EFF made large pennants based on the BF3 mini pennant set. I have the St. Paul Saints pennant, but have seen pennants for several of the teams from the American and Southern Assoc and Intl League.

Here are three others I found on eBay. I know I have also seen a Columbus Red Birds.

Not a good scan, but here is the BF3 mini pennant of this one.

While Red Ball did issue large pennants are premiums for Major League teams, they did not for any Minor League ones.

Thanks so much to the few folks who emailed me. I had a tiny hunch, but wasn't sure as I own a mini BF Red ball with same logo on pennant. I had a ceiling of $69 and interestingly enough the bid went about to my ceiling. Makes me even wonder if the other bidders were schilling me as well. Pennants are not in my wheelhouse of collecting, but I do own a few and I will say the vintage ones I own are not near this nice! The pin hole was a nice touch to throw the scent off. One thing that did it for me was the smell when I got the pennant. It had no smell. All my vintage stuff has "that smell!" Thanks again - I will be returning this to shipper or full refund.

Default 1980's EBB Reproductions

I guess Ebbetts reproduced all the Southern Association from 1936-39 Red Ball : I have now seen Pelicans, Barons, and Vols with spot on same image on Large pennant. (Thnx again for sharing your knowledge!) Here are my "original" Vols pennants + Southern Association sets of Mini's (They are same image as Large reproductions):

$69 seems to be around the going rate for those....if it had been a true 1930's pennant, I think you'd have paid in the hundreds of dollars, depending on how much competition you generally have for Nashville stuff.

Kudos to Jeremy for not getting defensive and looking at it constructively. I had not had a chance to email you back when you answered me, but ironically the "smell test" is one of the things I do when evaluating a pennant like this. All of these newer reproduction pennants will have a synthetic smell instead of a natural fiber (IE: cotton) smell to them. Also, when you manipulate the fabric it responds like a synthetic instead of a pressed natural fabric like most of these were made of. If you still cannot tell, you can attempt to pull the fabric apart. The original fabric will pull apart as it is pressed material where synthetic will stretch, but not pull apart. One last thing you can check is the graphics. When you attempt to crease the graphics the vintage graphics will generally crack, whereas most reproductions will bend and not crack. These "tests" can be manipulated by a forger, but it would take significant effort. If you choose to keep the pennant it will still look nice in your collection. If you choose to get a refund, let me know if you need any help with explaining details to the seller. I think they probably knew what they had though. BTW, those other full size pennants you showed are very difficult to find. Good luck with your collection. Jason

Default Couple of Phillies minis

I'd like to get some info on these two minis, the approximate date and maybe who issued them.

The green pennant without the ties is 14.5 inches long with the clipped tip. The Egner guide lists it as 1950's but I suspect it's earlier than that and I recall seeing similar pennants for other teams.

The black mini is 4 inches long x 1.5 inches high probably a gum or candy premium but I haven't seen this particular design before.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm new to the board. Longtime Giants fan and collector. On eBay, I go by unclebaseballmike, and have probably bought and sold from some of you guys over the years.

Long ago I wanted to create a piece that captured Bobby Thomson's moment from 1951. I found one of the "Cinderella Boys" pennants in an auction and added it to a few other elements. I hadn't seen one of these pennants before, but I didn't know it was so rare. I got lucky, it's in really nice shape. If I can figure out how to upload an image here, you'll be able to see the final result. (Because somebody will probably ask, I seem to remember the shop tucking the ties behind the pennant for framing purposes.) It's been one of my favorite Giants displays.

Mike

Default Banner?

Can a woman's silk headscarf also be a banner? Is this a hobby subset? They have some great graphics... Mike

I'm fairly sure "Collegiate of Ames" was a store in Ames, Iowa that made and sold collegiate items as pennants, tee-shirts, etc.

Mike has some great Giants stuff, based on the small sample I've seen. i have the same pennant in about 1/10th the condition. Please keep sharing, Mike! Do you still have those "things" (no spoiler alert) that are taller than you?
