Did anyone else see his interview this morning (CBS Sunday Morning)? If not, it had a short time with him showing his card collection. I saw some Ramlys & T207s (think I saw a Hooper in there) and lots more but not close enough to tell. There were the 19th century cards that folded out & looked like scorecards. Did anyone else see this & know what those were? I would love to see a close up of one. Thanks

My wife saw it while I was shuttling kids to church, I missed it.

Anyone catch it on a VCR?

I didn't see it, but were they Mort Rogers scorecards? Those have actually photos affixed to them. Just trying to guess, as I can't think of a 19th century foldout card.

Cool. Thanks Barry & Tom. I knew someone here would know what that card was. Very neat item. Thanks to rmacpa for posting the scan as I have never seen one before. How rare are they?

Frank, church must start pretty early. I was not even ready to leave for services while I was watching.

Thanks for showing that scan!!

Left house with girls at 7:50am so they could sing at some other church. Then went back to pick them up about 8:45am, this church is about 10 minutes from home... I do well to get to our church for 10:45 service.

But what we need is for someone here to have taped it... Anyone??

Mort Rogers scorecards are pretty rare. They can be found whole, and also with just the front cover and photo. I believe the Harry Wright that Roger has is the only complete one with a HOFer, although in the 1990's, a complete set of Boston players was found with just the front covers.

Mort Rogers was a player in the 1860's who was good at marketing and came up with the great idea of including a photograph of a player on his scorecards. Before that, they were plain. In this way, a very early collectible was born, as fans would invariably try to acquire as many different ones as they could. They may have been issued for two years, 1871 and 1872, because some were sold for 5 cents, and others for 10 cents.

I saw some of it. Unfortunately my wife picked that segement to update me on my to-do's with the taxes and I thought it better not to shoo her away.

He was going through 3 ring binders, showing all manner of things. Mort Rogers it was, but I wasn't able to see the player.

The segment was on 'Sunday Morning'. Here the link to the story. You'll see the video links at right. Click back in a few days and Keith's piece should there.

I don't know if he does lurk, but my guess is he might. I've known Keith for more than 20 years, and while we only speak occasionally we have had a good rapport. Because he is famous, I have always respected his privacy. I have no idea what he has in his collection- the few shots we saw on this newscast is the first time I have ever seen it. And yes, that was a Mort Rogers scorecard he was holding when he said "just your typical 1871 baseball cards."

Looks like Keith is not a slabhead. I wonder if he cracks them out when he buys them that way?

As he wrote in VCBC #23 ("Slab This!!"): "In short, don't buy a slabbed card. Ever."

Mark- I watched the clip segment on cards 3 times and never saw a Tinker T204(???) Saw two Ramlys though.
I was glad to see his T207 set, like mine, is totally unslabbed.

I thought when they showed his office (about the 6:16 point in the video) that his office number was T207. Watched it again, and I guess it's just 1207. Mind plays funny tricks on the eyes.

That's a nice piece on Olbermann. Good to see such a serious card advocate in a position to influence others. Regardless of whether you agree with his politics, the guy is sincere and passionate.

I think Keith takes great glee in shaking things up. Kind of a latter day Merry Prankster (I know those who dislike his politics will have something to say about my post. Go for it).

I've never met him, but I love everything about the guy.

That said, it appears that he most definitely has changed his tune from the "Never buy a slabbed card" days, as he's beaten me out on slabbed cards numerous times.

Anyone notice the scene where he's sitting in his office, and how he was typing? Left hand doing nothing but hit the space bar, and right index finger hitting all the letters. And he was going about as fast as I do using the traditional method!

It reminded me of a movie I saw way way long ago, with Clark Gable playing a journalist that is taking a journalism class from (?) Doris Day, maybe. I think it was Clark. Anyways, she treats him like a rookie student - doesn't know he's some big journalist. Then he starts blistering the typewriter with two-finger typing. That's what KO reminded me of.

BTW, I am a huge Countdown fan. He's got a very sly humor that you have to be pretty well-read to catch sometimes. Kind of like Mystery Science Theater 3000. And he's always sneaking in little baseball references and analogies. Plus, of course, it's good to finally see some sign of this liberal media I've been hearing so much about for the past 6 years! (hee - couldn't resist)

Joann

Hey Al,

Maybe he doesn't 'collect' slabbed cards. He buys the cards he wants, slabbed or not, and if they are slabbed he busts them out.
