My wife can't drive by an Antique shop....so, this weekend we stopped at one in Somerville, NJ. And,
surprise - surprise, there was a display of BB memorabilia and BB cards (T206's to 1960's).

The selection of T206's were about two dozen HOFers (including a Red COBB) and 20 additional cards.
I bought this group of 8 cards, that were very fairly priced. And, I will be going back there.

Nice!

My wife and I spent a day poking around antique shops in western NJ about two weeks ago. All I found were two 1960s children's store-model gloves, an old baseball, a 1970s catcher's mask, and a reproduced photo of Babe Ruth from 1935.

It was fun anyway, but it would have been much more fun had I found some T206s.

I've always "romanticized" that it is the Statue of Liberty over his left shoulder on this card. Part of the whole "Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie" thing. Anyone know for sure what it is? Thanks.

Ironically, the only cards I ever see at Antique Shops are 1986-1990 Topps, Donruss or Fleer.

Last year I visited an antique mall in San Antonio and a gentleman had 2 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey, Jr's for sale. I asked for the price, he says "$100." I say "that's crazy!" He rebuts "hell, I'll give you both of 'em for $180."

These 8 cards range from Vg to Ex; and, some have tougher backs. The initial total price came to a $285.
And, the store was having a 4th of July sale, discounting all purchases at 20 %.

So, these T206's cost me $228.-

That averages out to approx. $28 per card.......not bad, especially with Burch, Chase, and a tough Doyle
card in this lot......and, let's not forget Heinie Wagner....ha !

BTW, I ALWAYS find a ton of stuff when I go to antique malls in Reno. Last year I found several 1950's regional issues, a T213 Type 1 common, several interesting west coast turn of the century cabinets and postcards, along with other trinkets. I also can't forget my E94 "find" two years ago in Reno either.

I see 206's in antique stores quite often. But since I do not collect them, I don't buy them. They are very plentiful to say the least. 15 years ago or so, when I was new to the hobby, I would pick them up occasionally, but no more. My interests are elsewhere. Of course if I saw a terrific bargain, I would pick them up, and resell, but all I ever see is commons. Not interested.

There was a shop in Lincoln that sold them 20 years ago, at about 3 1/2 the book price at that time, but I've not found anyplace in Lincoln, Sioux Falls, St. Joe, Omaha or Hannibal in the past 15 years. I tell them I'm looking for old stuff and they show me mid-90s refractors!

I live in the Mpls/St paul area. There is a small historical city near me, that has turned itself into an historic tourist location. It consists primarily of antique shops, antique book stores, etc. etc. The antique stores line the main street for about a half a mile, or more. I see 206's in the stores all the time. Don't get me wrong, they're not laying around by the thousands, but to see a bunch here, and a bunch there, is not uncommon. A bunch meaning 5 or 6. My wife and I used to go their searching for nuggets a few years back. She would help me dig around and find treasures. We don't do it so much any more, because I can shop on E bay much easier. But yes, 206's are abundant. I'm sure there other cities where this also the case.

I have purchased 100s of T206s at antique stores over the past 3-4 years ranging from 1s-7s. No rare backs though there were stars Hofers commons and some southern leaguers.

So Ted - Was it the store on that side street or the one that is in the old Woolworth's? And, for those of us who follow this sort, what were the backs on those cards? I'm guessing the Stienfeldt was one of the Sovereigns that you were looking for. Nice pick up.

I have found prewar cards in Omaha and Lincoln within the last 3-4 years. Notably in Omaha at the Brass Armadillo I found an E98 Davis, a couple of T210,a T209 Contentnea, and a few E220s all for less than $10 each. I bought them all. In Lincoln just last year at the Haymarket Antique mall there were a bunch of T206 and Obaks but they were all $40+ for common ones in P-VG conditions. I also found a 1922 Eastern Exhibit Hornsby Postcard in Omaha. I don't get up to look in Omaha as much as I should, but there is one dealer at the Armadillo that has some unbelievable baseball memorabilia from uniforms, gloves, bats and photos dating back to the 1880s. All too pricey, but neat to see nonetheless. I had a phone conversation with the dealer recently and he has a lot more - he's taking it all to ebay sometime next year.

I could go to the small town this weekend, and I guarentee i could find at least 10 206's. They are not that hard to find. Goudeys are very easy to find. They are always beat up though. These are not card shops, they are just antique stores who do not know what they have. A few years ago I was in one of them, and about 15 or 20 autographed cards were under the front counter glass. I think I paid $40. They have since been slabbed by PSA. All were legit. Mostly hall of famers from the mid to late 30s'. Stuff is out there, and it ain't that hard to find.
