Default Player's Identification please?

Posted By: joe

I have this original photo that came from the storage in the basement of Navin Field, Briggs Stadium, Tiger Stadium with 7 players pictured, not in uniform. Left to right are ?, George Kell, Charlie Gehringer, ?, Ty Cobb, ?, and Hank Greenberg. Can anyone identify the (3) ? marks in the photo 1st, 4th and 6th left to right.

Thanks joe

The man in the middle looks like Sam Crawford, but I'm not sure on the other two. Could you do a closer scan of the faces?

Yep...the man in the middle is definitely Wahoo Sam. I could probably identify the others with a better scan.

Just a guess, but since this seems to be a photo of the Tigers all time best hitters is one of the other two Harry Heilmann?

I'll try to get better close up scans today. Can't seem to get it right. I don't think Heilman is in the photo though.

To the right of Crawford is Charlie Gehringer, to Crawfords left looks to be Ty Cobb. The far right of the photo is Hank Greenberg. Man next to Gehringer looks like Heilmann, I can not pinpoint the remaining two guys but they will come to me.

5. They don't want to get cutoff by the top of the photo
4. They ate a bad burrito
3. They're doing Tiger Yoga
2. They're playing patty cake and just came to the knee slap part
1. They're getting ready to show off their Sumo wrestling stance

The scan is not clear enough to be certain, but the gentleman on the far left of the photo looks to me like Heine Manush.

It could be Heilmann, but I thought he was a little closer in age to Cobb, and the man on the left appears to be quite a bit younger.

Also, Heilmann died in 1951. If this photo can be dated after 1951, then that would rule out Heilmann.

Those sure look like 40's zoot suits to me, so I would date photo pre 1950.

The guy on the left looks like Billy Rogell to me, and he would be grouped with two other infielders in Kell and Gehringer, so that makes sense. The outfielders Crawford and Cobb are together in the middle. 1st baseman Greenberg is on the right. I don't recognize the guy next to Greenberg, but I would guess he is another first baseman or possibly an outfielder based on where he is in the picture.
