This original comic art originated from the Clemente comic produced by Legendary Comics in 1992. Although the comic was disappointing I loved the title page art. I took a chance and called Revolutionary Comics. I talked to Todd Loren who owned the company and he agreed to sell me the page. He said he had the painted version of the page as well but had to locate it. He suggested that I call him back in a couple of months and he would sell that to me as well. I'm glad I purchased the original inked page because when I attempted to call him again I learned he had been murdered. The murder remains unsolved. I later learned he was quite an unpopular and controversial person.

It is one of the stranger stories I have related to my collection. There is a theory that Loren was killed by serial murderer Andrew Cunanan. One of Cunanan's victims was designer Gianni Versace. So on to less macabre subjects...what's on tap for day 79 Mike?

That is a great piece of artwork Mike! As Howard said, the back story is crazy, I did a google search after I read your post.

I'm realizing you have a pretty nice Roberto collection yourself mixed in with all your Pirates stuff. Would love to see more from you and Howard.

On tap for Day 79? Now I feel some pressure...it was going to be a pretty pedestrian piece, but I'll try to post something better.

This is an Old Timers day program from the first game I ever attended. Shown is the front cover, back cover, and the photo and write-up for Roberto.

Day 79

I won this next piece in 1999 off eBay. I remember in the seller's item description he stated that he had obtained these autographs in person when he was a kid. After I won the item, I asked the seller if he would write a short note detailing his acquisition of the autographs. The seller kindly agreed and I am posting a photo of the letter he sent me. I like how he remembers the little details (except who won the game) and this letter is part of the appeal in owning it to me.

P.S. July 6th, 1961 was a double-header and the Pirates won Game 1 by a score of 15-3, however they lost the second game to the Cubs 5-1.

Great program blackandgold!

Nice autograph Mike. I think that's the third one you posted? I own a couple that I will share here eventually. Blackandgold l think it's very cool you got to see that game. Here are a few original amateur slides taken at that game. They include Clemente, Mantle, and Berra . I have many others from that day. If you are interested in seeing those let me know. This is the only Clemente image I have from that day. I dont know if he played in that game beyond being introduced. I have photos of Maz playing second. I assume Cash started at second base that day against Philadelphia. However, Clemente doesn't appear at the plate or in the field. My program for that game is unscored so I don't know if he played. Do you recall who won the game? I have a slide of the scoreboard that shows the Bucs ahead 2-1 in the 6th.

Mike,
It's great to see photos from that day! The Pirates won the 1960 replay 2-1, and the 1971 Buccos lost to the Phillies 5-3. I really don't recall much about who played or what happened, but I do remember getting a Willie Stargell poster.

Autographed Roberto Clemente Night Poster. This is one of my favorite items . The autograph is almost eight inches long. I added it to my collection in 1989. At the time I was making about $10 an hour and had just married. I thought my wife was going to kill me for buying it. She didn't even blink when I told her that I spent essentially a week's salary on it when we could barely pay the rent. She doesn't always understand my collecting but 29 year's later she has come to accept that she married a perpetual child.

Great poster Mike! My wife is also pretty understanding with regards to my purchases, but when I think about it, she makes a hell of a lot more purchases than I do, sooo.........

Great poster Mike. I am loving this thread. It is such fun seeing Clemente items I have not encountered before. Today is the anniversary of his being voted into the HOF. Here's a cool link https://www.lavidabaseball.com/my-cl...erto-advocate/ and some amateur photos of his HOF display as it appeared 45 years ago.

I would love to contribute more frequently, but life is super busy for me. I will contribute when I can.

Here are the only 5 album size records with Clemente featured on the cover. The first 2 are triple b productions and are just short of common - these 2 copies are still sealed.

Next up is a conversation with Roberto - a bit tougher than the triple b albums. This one too is still sealed.

Next up is the Ramito canta album - don't know much about this one - other than to say I have only seen 3 of these ever.

Last up is the Pittsburgh symphony orchestra recording I referenced in an earlier post. Super tough.

There is a reprint of this one floating around. I have only seen 1 other original. This is one of my earliest collection pick ups - I think I bought it close to 30 years ago.

Default Close enough?

So this is an opening day program for the 1955 Dodgers - a game played against the pirates on April 13, 1955. Clemente didn't play in the game, but it was the first game played by the pirates in 1955 - I like to imagine an excited Clemente sitting on the bench wearing a pirates uniform number 13 wanting so badly to play. I also appreciate the irony of the fact that the Pirates had just "stolen" Clemente from the Brooklyn farm system. Lastly Clemente would get his first opportunity to play a few games later in a doubleheader against the Dodgers.

I am pretty sure I have a stub floating around for the game as well.

Default A mystery!

I purchased this scorecard a long time ago as a super early Clemente scorecard from Puerto Rico. It is dated February 3,1952.

After purchasing it, I was confused to learn that Clemente signed his first contract with Santurce in October of 1952.

It took me years before finding what I believe to be an answer. Before I share it, I want to ask readers here to offer their thoughts or facts to make sense of this.

Great stuff Howard as always!

I had a couple of opportunities to purchase this program (or one like it), but passed. Probably should have just pulled the trigger. It's a great piece.

Does anyone know why SGC will slab the Greiner Tire photo cards but PSA won't? (that's what I heard, and the pop reports imply it since PSA does not acknowledge the set at all)

Have no idea, I have never submitted anything for grading. Did not know PSA wouldn’t grade these.

Using the same photo as the Greiner Tire, this Jay Publishing photo seemed to be one of the tougher Jay photos for me to obtain. It just isn't offered for sale as often as some of their other photos.

I'm 100% certain PSA did not slab Greiner Tire cards and SGC did, as of Jan. 2017 (I got a SGC 70/5.5 Clemente graded at that time). I think it might have to do with slab size, but not 100% sure. I called PSA and they gave me a reason in a follow-up email, but I now forget the reason

My answer would be a disappointing one, but I'm inclined to think the Clemente in the program is not Roberto. From what I can piece together, Roberto was not "discovered" by Santurce until after the 1951-52 season.

I guess my second guess would be that the program has the wrong year on it!

Howard,

That was my thinking, that maybe the wrong date was written on the program.

Day 86

It took me a while to obtain this next photo. The thing that surprised me the most when in hand was the size of the photo. I always assumed it was a smaller photo, but it actually is relatively large. The scan is pretty accurate for size (photo might actually be slightly larger). This might be my favorite team issued photo of Roberto.

Default 1972 Pirates cut-outs

Something else I’ve never seen. I thought I’ve seen a lot of Clemente oddball items over the years; I guess I was mistaken.

Mentioned it previously, but really like the cut-outs that were meant to be cut from newspapers. So, how many in this set?

Default The answer is.......

It took me years before finding what I believe to be an answer. Before I share it, I want to ask readers here to offer their thoughts or facts to make sense of this.
So like was suggested I considered - perhaps it was a different Clemente? But, what are the chances? Researched it and couldn't find evidence of another Clemente that played in the Puerto Rican league during those years. Maybe the date was wrong? Maybe, I just didn't know and it it remained a mystery for many years.......until.... Lelands auctioned of a very interesting piece of memorabilia - A questionnaire filled out by Clemente in 1954 - clearly indicating that he played with Santurce as early as 1951!!!! Obviously with no contract and an as yet unassigned uniform number!! Unfortunately I was outbid on the original -but snagged a good jpg to keep with the scorecard - highly likely to be the earliest known Clemente scorecard (for sure the earliest I have ever seen) !

Wow! If anyone would know what team he was in for the 1951-52 season, I guess it would be Clemente himself. Makes me think his bios need to be updated. They seem to suggest he was discovered playing for the Mules following that 1951-52 season.

I don't know very much about Clemente the specific person at all (except for the basic generalities often repeated), but that questionnaire seems to have been written by someone quite comfortable with (fluent in) English. Is that piece, in fact, known to have been actually written by him? Does the handwriting match? Or is it possible someone else wrote it up for him to sign? Again, not much knowledge here (and he was obviously bilingual), but I was always under the impression that he had a bit of a tough time speaking English effectively early in his career. Have I been just flat out wrong thinking that??

I just went to look the item up. It sold in the November 2009 Lelands sale. There is a second page. The description states it was filled out by someone else and signed by Clemente.

Yes; picked up both the b&w and color snapshot photos. Thanks so much for the heads up on the photos. I don’t always keep up with eBay on Brooksie items so sometimes nice pieces are missed. I don’t have a lot of snapshot photos, but there definitely seems like a much higher price needs to be paid if you want to add to your collection.
