Default More postcards

Since some non-baseball postcards have been included in this thread I'll include two here along with baseball:
1. 1915-1916 Portland Rosebuds (first U.S. team to play for Stanley Cup)
2. A fun boxing postcard.
3. A guy who loves his mom.
4. A guy named Joe.

You've got a very good case there, Scott. I guess now the big question is whether or not the postcard is real since you doubted its authenticity earlier. I wish you were closer to me, I would be happy to take a look and give you my opinion, for what it's worth. I know you have handled lots of real photo postcards before and are probably more of an expert than I am.

Thanks. I am pretty good with photos, but every now and then I get one that just doesn't look quite right - probably paranoia on my part, but David will have it in hand in 30 minutes, so we'll know then.

It looks more 'good' than it does 'bad'.

I got this in the mail today. It is not even for my personal collection as he is not an American and I only collect images of American Olympians. This signature is nice for my Olympic Autograph database. Probably the only exemplar collection of just Olympians. It does not have a full postcard back, just the address lines, but is it printed on RPPC paper so I feel it fits in the category.

This is Claes Johanson (1884-1949) - He won a gold medal in Greco-Roman Wrestling (middleweight) at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm and a gold medal in Greco-Roman Wrestling (light heavyweight) at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerpen. He also competed in 1924 in Paris, but did not medal at the age of 40.

He has signed the back. Below his signature it reads: 'Olympiska Mastare 1920' - Olympic Champion 1920 and 'Goteborg, Sverige' - Goteborg, Sweden, the town he lived in.

Cap Anson's Colts playing in Marengo, IL, August 28, 1908.

I did a comprehensive research project on this postcard, complete with newspaper accounts of the game. It's an interesting read!

Default images that tell a story

Some postcards tell a story that has nothing to do with runs, hits, or errors.

The first tells a story in its image alone. It speaks for itself.

The second reflects the itinerant life led by some barnstorming African American teams.

The third of Slim Sallee tells us some things about him.

The fourth is an iconic image of courage.

The last speaks for itself in the same way as the first, but says something entirely different.

holy crap, Jim. Is that written by Cy Young?

Edited to add: I can't find any Lula in relation to Cy, so maybe my eyes deceive me. And I know nothing of handwriting so....

Very cool card nonetheless. I have never seen another of the same image.

Default Charlie Young

Jason, per the 1940 census, Lula M. Young (to whom that postcard is addressed) was married to Charlie C. Young. But no matter, it is a very nice postcard, for sure.

Well, I was wondering if you had that postcard, Dave, and I guess you do...and that postcard of Bill James, Hap Myers and a shrunken down Rabbit Maranville is incredibly cool.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mark...One of the great things about postcards, there is always something new showing up and some many avenues to collect....and talk about rarity...there are less copies known of most of the postcards shown in the last couple of posts than there are Honus Wagner T206s available, with several of these cards being one of one known. It's a wonderful hobby niche with good guys involved.

Michael...we speak the same language, great stuff...I've been looking for the Speaker American Series after letting one get away from my collection a few years ago....and had never seen the Cady Underwood card, very nice! Thanks to a trade with a fellow board member I just added Cy Delivering the goods. Fun stuff.

Condition is lacking, but I nevertheless was thrilled to pick it up recently. I think I'm going to have it framed, which will be a challenge. Sorry for the crappy, smart-phone photo.

Rob...Thanks for posting this card, I've only seen it one other time, it was meant to be sent rolled as opposed to folded, great item congratulations.

Thanks, Jim.

While searching for other examples that had sold, the only one I was able to find was in a Leland's auction, maybe about 5 years ago. Is that the same one you referenced?

Just stumbled on this thread, what a great collection of postcards, it was fun paging through.

One to add, the writing on the postcard is by Tinker's first wife, Ruby. I've never seen another example of this card. I have no idea about the show mentioned on the card.
