Default Does T216 Wagner contradict his T206 story ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

I have not seen this subject up for debate on this Forum.

The T216 tobacco card set, issued between 1911 - 1916, can
be found with three backs....the most common is KOTTON cig-
arettes. The rare backs are MINO and Virginia Extra. These
brands represent the Peoples Tobacco Co. of Louisiana.

Honus Wagner is depicted on four cards of this issue, either
in batting or throwing poses. These cards were obviously
printed subsequent to his "No Cigarette Endorsement" with
respect to the T206 set.

Do we have here a gross contradiction in the original story
of his T206 card, or what ?
Can someone please provide a plausible explanation ?

Not that this is relevant, but for my own education, i thought it was 1911-14

It doesn't necessarily contradict his story because the T206 set was widely distributed and T216 was a regional Louisana issue. I spoke to Rob Lifson about this awhile back and according to him the use of Wagner's image in this issue was done without his knowledge and/or permission. I'm not saying I believe his T206 story but with T216 being a regional issue it's possible that Wagner simply didn't know his image was being used.

We know he didnt mind tabacco itself ..maybe he just didnt care for cigarettes, maybe he thought they were femenine or too snotty.\

If it was about money how come none of the other superstars made a fuzz about it?

My memory could be failing me, but wasn't there a 1911 issue of Sporting News recently found that had an article about Wagner not signing on with the American Tobacco Co. for the so-called T206 set because he did not want to encourage kids to buy packs of cigarettes? He even gave the guy who came to get him to sign on $10, which was his kickback for every major leaguer signed up, so that he would not personally be affected by Honus' decision. I thought this issue was put to rest regarding the T206. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? I would agree with Robe Lifson regarding the T216, Wagner probably was unaware of it way up in Pittsburg.
