I did not win one lot in Mastro. I would have thought in 2 days and a 1,000 lots I could have beat out one of you for a couple cards, but no such luck. What did you win? What prices shocked you to be either too high or low?

Dan, say it once more with feeling!

I thought that the Lionel Carter Cobb E102 SGC 6 that went for almost 26K was surprisingly high. Also, the Cobb autographed T205 for almost 13K!

I won two lots at what I think are reasonable prices...which probably means I over paid.

REA today, very excited there is some great stuff.

Dan - you going to take out your anger today by over-bidding early and often ??

I had about 35 bids on different lots. I think I was bridesmaid on 1-2 but didn't win any. There was nothing I "needed" only a few things I wanted. Big difference for me in that aspect. If I need something will go all in....If I only want it....not so much "all in".....Good luck today for everyone bidding in REA...

Among T206's and 1933 Goudeys that I was tracking, prices came out about as I expected. About 1.5x to 2x book value for the T206's, and around book value for the Goudeys. Somewhat surprising was the 1951 Bowman Mantle SGC Mint 9 that went for $162,412 with buyer's premium; it was a nice one to be sure, but that is incredible.

There were two things I badly wanted. In the scheme of things, there is nothing I need. I ended up bidding on only one thing, due to the slowness of it all. I have no patience for slowness. I was in the running until late in the game. It took so many minutes to see what the winning bid was, I quit. So I am not sure how much I got out bid by. I guess I don't need to know. Nice things in the auction however.

Bid on 15+/- lots, really only one that I wanted badly. E103 Lajoie, upgrade from 3 to 5, got my second bid in at the absolute max I was willing to go and there were still 2 more bids. $285,000 for 38 Goudey set - a lot of change.

Again, those e90-1 Joe Jackson cards (Thursday) surprised me. The SGC 30 went for $17,100 and the SGC 40 for $30,000. Yikes.

Did they surprise you on the high side or the low side? I thought they were on the low side but admit I have little experience with this card.

The Mathewson 1914 CJ SGC 30 going for $10,800 I thought was a steal.

Many of the E107s went for lower than I thought.

Steve:

I thought they were VERY high. Both cards were very nice for the grades, but I would have expected the 40 to go for $20Kish (or less) and the 30 for $13-14 (or less).

I think they were right in line if you take into consideration what this set's been doing.
If I would have had the funds to snag one for my set, I would have definately done it.
The demand for this card in presentable condition as these were, out does the supply
available.

Tony

Of Dan's two part question, folks seem to be conveniently avoiding part A which is: "what did you win?"

OK, I'll go first and divulge one card I won: T206 Speaker Drum Back

I am real excited about this and didn't have to pay an arm and a leg.

I was not surprised by the E107 Wagner either. I would not have been at all shocked if it was in the 150-175 range. I was surprised at what the SCP one went for last year.

agreed with wes and jim. i think it's a great card and still very undervalued.

edited to add utterly shocked at the e90-1 jax prices and also how much the e95 cobb went for. i only monitor caramel stuff so it's nice to see other perspectives to compare etc...

Over time, the price paid last night could prove to be quite a bargain. I've always thought the E107 Wagner (along with the T210 Jackson and the Baltimore News Ruth) was on the short list of cards that could replace the T206 Wagner as the premier twentieth century card.

before the auction, I thought 180.

If I had the money to spend -
it would have been *THE card that I would have wanted in all recent auctions.

love that card.

The E107 Wagner to me is barely a baseball card. It's Honus in a business suit.

Bar None, less than 10 examples known, with only 7 confirmed, from the toughest baseball card set of all time. You really can't do much better than that.

a fine card on its own merits to be sure, but I share your preferences for baseball cards depicting players in their uniforms, rather than formal wear of the time...those "suit cards" might as well be GQ advertisements, as far as I am concerned...but that's just my opinion and my dollars matter not in that market!

I kind of took a liking to the 'street clothes' cards when I briefly dabbled in the Mayo's.

I think the street clothes makes me like it more.

I don't know what I think of the price of the E107 Wagner in the abstract. But I am surprised that the E107 Young was just a rounding error compared to Wagner.

they were some of the more common HOFers, even the Cy Young is one of the easier to find E107 Hofers. Had they been without back damage and tougher Hofer's they would have seen a lot more action. These particular ones have traded hands several times in the last few years, a few board members have been in the ownership loop on these.

edited to add, if you ever wanted to but a HOFer this was a very oportune time.

Scott--What are you talking about? How can you say the E107 set is the toughest set of all time. Here is a list of tougher set for starters: Lone Jack, Kalamazoo Bats, Four Base Hits. If you are talking about tougher sets to complete how about Old Judge. It has never been completed in any form. No question that E107s are tough but lets keep it real.

I really only had interest in one lot, the 1887 World Championship Program (REA) but couldn't pull the trigger on the next price up. Congrats to whoever won it at $6500.

In watching the auction, I thought there were some good values like many of the N173 NY cabinets (Mastro) that went individually. The N172 HOFers were all over the map; some went very reasonably while others carried high premiums.

I'm with Kevin Cummings and others who are hoping some of the larger lots are broken up and shared with others.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

do you have the whole set of e107's? what do you think about the Mello Mints?....has a set ever been done ?

I was missing Wagner- Cobb -Matty for completion in 1998. I sold for the right reasons ,but would have liked to had completed if possible .After that I ended up with a Mathewson Greg Schwartz found a Cobb and I had seen 2 Wagner battings. If ever completed and most were mid grade...except maybe the Matty ,Cobb and 1 common...what would be a guess on the set price completed ?

MOst everyone of all the high end ones came from Broadway Rick....including the large group of e94's and e103's that I had. That guy had some cards back in the day.

After missing Mastro E103 Lajoie, I got the REA E103 Cobb - pretty good upgrade on my set from a 2 to a 4 . Made 1 more bid than I wanted to, but woke up this AM to see that it had held. Scott nice pick up on the TTT Burkett does your old one need a new home?
