Default Tuesday nite TRIVIA ?

A new Manager attending a press conference was asked......

" How will some of your older players hold up through the longer 162-game season ? "

Who is this Manager....and, what was his very prescient response ? ?

Must be the person who hit the first World Series home run at Yankee Stadium.

I think David and I know who it is, but I cannot remember the exact quote, but probably something like, "Well, if I can, they can."

...on the other hand, you said 'NEW' manager, so perhaps David and I are not as smart as I thought.

It may be the person playing left-field on the last play of the previous year.

Nope, that's wrong too...Ted, you asked a good one!

Whoever it was, he probably didn't have to ask, "What does prescient mean?"

That's right, Ted, you'll have to dumb it down for me.

Come on, I just gave you a good clue (post #4).

If you google "prescient" that will be another clue for you.

Casey Stengel, 1962 New York Mets? I'm guessing that because of the "new" 162 game schedule.

OK, now what was Ralph Houk's response at this Spring 1961 press conference that proved to be so prescient ?

He said "We would set foot on the moon 47 years before the Cubs would win another World Series."

Paul S is very close to the correct answer.

One more chance to cite Ralph Houk's response. It's a beauty.

TED Z

OK....Eric Perry guessed correctly....the new Manager was Ralph Houk.

Mid January 1961, Ralph Houk was responding to NY sportswriters' questions.
One sportswriter asked Ralph...... " How will Mantle's legs hold up through the longer, 162-game schedule ? "

Ralph said......" I hope Mantle plays 162 games; and, if he does he will hit 60 HR's and Maris will hit 59....they will make me a helluva a manager . "

Now is that a prescient call....or what ?

Thanks to those who participated.

Maris's high to that point was 39 so interesting that he expected 59 out of him.
