Default Aesthetics Alone- '33 Goudey vs. '34 Diamond Stars

Posted By: peter chao

'33 Goudey is favored among collectors because Ruth and Gehrig are well-represented in '33 Goudey. However, if we look only at the Design and artwork of '33 Goudey and '34 Diamond Stars, which set do you prefer?

My preference is for '34 Diamond Stars just because it is more colorful.

Diamond Stars, no question.

Except #37 from the '34 Goudey set is, IMO, one of the most beautiful cards ever produced, above any Diamond Star.

The art deco styling of the Diamond Stars is stellar... It's like the South Beach strip on cardboard. Wish I still had my DS Beast.

Definitely the Diamond Stars ... the entire set looks like it was created by one artist ... it has great style. The Goudeys look like they were created by several artists who altered their style as they went along, kind of like the T206s ...

Definately the Goudeys. The art deco of the Diamond Stars is kinda cool but the colors do have a rather drab sameness across the set. Also, I don't feel the overall quality, approaches the Goudeys.

i like and collect them both. the diamond stars are more artsy, their deco style is representitive of the glamor of that era.but baseball really wasn't too glamourous during the depression. the goudeys are really varied in their design but capture a more simple look of baseball. but some are deco too
like these two.
overall i like the goudeys just because of the various styles

Goudey for sure. Not just for their look but for their significance in the baseball card hierarchy as well.
