Default What did I miss on this Pelty?

First off, I'm not suggesting any kind of funny business with the auction. I am just really curious at the price...

Ran across this last night... how is it that three separate bidders each went $81 or higher? I know that there is some demand for the horizontals, but with soft corners, a crease, back paper loss and a pencil mark... really? $86?

What is it that I'm not seeing?

If you look at the recent end prices, his cards seem to be going up in value. Also check out active listings for this card...there isn't one on ebay right now, so if someone wanted one, that was their only option. I would say, if you have an extra one of these cards, now is the time to put in on ebay because....insert supply and demand spiel here

Default ugh

go figure... Pelty Horizontal is one of the 101 I don't have. Ugh. Don't want to pay $150 for an (otherwise) common.

Demand for Pelty could be greater than otherwise expected due to collectors who chase cards of Jewish ballplayers.

I think it has to be more than the Jewish aspect, because his vertical card is plentiful on ebay right now and ending prices recently are in line with your average common player. The horizontal card is the one getting the bump. You may have a case where there is a hoarder out there and it's the next Titus card.

I bought one of his cards with a split back and a color missing in his collar and thought I overpaid for it just to get it, but now it looks like I didn't. I also like how it looks like he has eye white on(it's supposed to be black Mr. Pelty) due to the registration

Jewish ballplayer in T206

+ Horizontal image.

+ Limited series [150 only?]

= higher price than a typical card.

That was my listing. Definitely no funny business with the auction. I recently upgraded mine and listed this one. The prices on this card have drastically spiked recently, much like the Titus card. There was always a bit of a premium on this card, for all the reasons people have mentioned, but I don't have a good answer for why the prices have increased as significantly as they have. Mine actually went for a little less than some others in similar condition recently.

I won the auction. Did I pay more than I wanted to? Of course. This is one of the few commons I need and I have been chasing it for a while. Add that to the fact that I lost two other cards last night in the last second and yes, I pulled the trigger on this one. Also, I have done business with Marc several times in the past and know that he is a top-notch seller. BTW there are no other Pelty horizontals available on ebay at the moment.

I will second that Marc is a great seller. I have made at least a half dozen purchases from him on the B/S/T and the transactions were always flawless.

Marc is a great buyer as well - very pleasant to do business with, on either end.

I have not bought from him in a while but Marc is top notch in my book as a seller. This Pelty is a great example of how a seemingly common card can be a real barnburner when it comes to T206 sales.

Hey, one just showed up on ebay for only $145 ungraded! Tremendous eye-appeal!

I didn't realize it was you, sorry. I don't blame you for the high price to start and it obviously wasn't too high. Congrats. If I was home, I'd sell the extra one I have right now. I might even have two of them extra, not sure and can't check now.

You need to find a T206 that you have multiples of and then start a thread about how scarce that particular player is getting. I'd go with:

"Scary how few Harry McIntyre Brooklyn variations you see nowadays..."

Then muddy the waters with some random facts that don't have anything to do with scarcity, but confuse the issue:

"And when you consider that there's also the Brooklyn and Chicago version AND the fact that his last name was actually spelled McIntire.....well I know what card I'd never let go...."

I know of one guy who has close to 50 Pelty horizontal cards (though I should say I have not seen them in person). I sold him my Brown Hindu, which was his first of that combination. I miss that card.

Beautiful image, and a very good pitcher (on a pretty bad team).

There are still none on ebay and the only one listed in the last few days was because of this thread. Compare that to 12 of the vertical pose of Pelty. If the last post is right, there might be someone buying them up and they are starting to dry up(in T206 terms of drying up that is)

Again, the fact is that I have never seen them in person, so perhaps he was yanking my chain, but he seemed to be sincere, so who knows.

That was over a year ago, so if in fact he is telling the truth, which my gut tells me he is, he may have acquired many more examples since this time.

Who knows, to be honest?

Let's see how high the price can go. If this sells, I feel sorry for people who don't have one. Is this someone from the board selling it?

I think the Pelty Horiz T206 is one of the most beautiful T206's in the set. That one that just sold is very nice...but $450...no way...I just got an early babe ruth exhibit for that money!!!!
