Recently purchased 1914 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb - Authentic?
Hello, please forgive me if I have posted this incorrectly; this is my first time posting on this forum.
I recently stumbled upon an eBay auction of 6 ungraded 1914 Cracker Jack cards including Ty Cobb. The auction had only been up for around 30 minutes when I found it and had a seemingly reasonable buy-it-now price ($1200.00). Although the pictures were too poor to completely determine their condition/authenticity, I took a chance and bought it as I feared someone else would if I waited too long. I received the cards the other day and after closely inspecting them with a jeweler's loop, I am pretty certain that they are authentic. However, I am new to the Cracker Jack set, and before I send them off to PSA I was hoping someone might give me a quick opinion as to their authenticity. Also, I normally look at recently sold cards on ebay to determine how much to spend on any given card, but there are not many 1914 CJ's sold on a regular basis, so I'm not completely sure whether or not I overpaid. Here's a link to an imgur album with scans of the cards (http://imgur.com/a/2RdPW). Clicking on any individual picture will open a higher-res version. Any help as to their authenticity/value would be much appreciated! Thanks! |

was cringing as i clicked on the link as these threads usually never go well but the cards are authentic '14 cjs. can't speak on the price but you do have any hof in the lot with the marquard. i'd say the price wasn't worth the gamble tho if you weren't 100% sure that they're authentic.

The card is authentic, but one flaw, other than the loss of the bottom left corner, is that it looks like someone might have trimmed the top border.

Thanks so much for all the quick replies! One more question: The Thomas is the only card without any serious flaws (paper loss, creasing), although it does have a tape stain on the back. Will PSA grade this card with an ST qualifier, or will it automatically be bumped down to a 1 or a 2? Thanks!

Those are real / authentic. The Cobb virtually has a hole through it, if you look at the back you can see the thin spot, then look again at the front and you can see where it is either super thin or actually through the card. Looks like that happened because someone pulled the cards off of something to which they'd been glued, soaking might have avoided that. Still, nice cards. I'd like a Cobb Cracker Jack like that one!

Thanks! The seller told me his mom glued them to a scrapbook in the 60's. I was actually impressed with how little damage they sustained during their removal after handling them myself. I felt like I was going to tear them just removing them from their old holders...

Nice looking authentic 1914 Cracker Jack Cobb! Wow, great purchase...........congratulations! If I had seen that BIN, I would have walked away and not have lost an ounce of sleep, but your faith in mankind worked for you this time. Glad to see you are a student of Gandhi; hopefully you've read some Shakespearean tragedies or even some George Castanza's.
Kids don't try this at home. Congrats again! Lovely Day... |

I agree the Cobb looks good.... I own a 14 Cobb and the closeups show the same paper characteristics as mine. It should get an "A" at least in the slab..and I'm sure many people will be happy to own one even with that corner missing. Nice haul!
