Default OT, and "possibly" a sensitive issue (finally my reply)

Posted By: Bob S

I noticed, while reviewing a thread earlier that one of the posters (login...willstk), alluded to the fact that they were in Baltimore.

Well, I hope that in spite of my health issues, I'll someday soon be able to get out and about on a more frequent basis.

Actually, since my wife died I was gradually becoming more isolated, irrespective of, and several years before, the health probs.

Anyway, to get to my point LOL... I'm within 50 miles of the Baltimore area, and I wonder if members who are located in the same general area would let me know, (post or email...either way), so that if they were interested, maybe we could occassionally get together to talk about our shared interest here on VBC or whatever.

Obviously, this is OT, and I realize some unknown % of members want to retain absolute privacy, but I didn't think it would do any harm to ask.

Best to all.

Bob

Hi folks,

I'll eventually really annoy someone on this great forum, but I hope this won't be the time. LOL

I had to comment that I guess the lack of a single response or email regarding my post proves that we live in a culture in which the fear or distrust of strangers is widespread.

Actually, I'm hoping the lack of replies was simply that no members live close to the Baltimore area.

Bob, I do not fear you and I hope that you feel the same toward me because I hope to harm no one. I am three hours north of Baltimore, so the possibility of a visit exists.

Heck, I could tell the wife that we are going to Wash DC with a brief stop off at a friend's, for example.

I live in Texas and we have always viewed you people from the border states with a cautious eye. It's not like those Californians where we know that they can't be trusted.

yeah, but with his attitude we had to sentence him to life in Texas (sorry Leon, our gain is your loss!)
Seriously a bunch of us get together in L.A. a few times a year, and it's always a lot of fun. Best of luck setting it up in Baltimore.

Hi Bob

I even offered free beer, hot dogs and books in Vancouver and no net54er showed up http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/message/1155699040/

(Although Scott F and Jeff O had the best excuses )

Always accomodating in Vancouver,

Max

Hi, I saw your post a while back, and I would have responded, because that's the kind of crazy stuff that I would usually do, but I live about 3 hours away and I don't know Dubya about prewar baseball cards. I was an obsessive collector of 70s and 80s cards way back when, but I never had the bucks to even find out what you guys are all talking about. I'm new to the board thanks to the Cobb/Edwards scam, but your guys enthusiasm is contagious. I don't have any money but I'd be interested in Negro Leagues cards if they did exist.

We'll be in Baltimore on Sept 14 for the Bosox game - we'll buy you a beer if you want to get together.

Bob S:

I went to the Net 54 dinner and for the first time met many of the guys from the board....and I wouldn't trust any of them....but that being said I have been known of write out multi-thousand dollar checks to guys on this board so that the recipient of that check can send me a piece of cardboard in return. Hmmmmm

All kidding aside, I hope all is well with your Lymes Disease.

Hey Bob -
What town exactly?
50 miles from Baltimore covers about 4 states and DC.
Most of meetings with fellow collectors are at shows or are timed to be near a show.
Best show in Balto area is Leo's at Arthur Slade School. Very little pre-war, but I usually find something I like. Next one 9/16.

Regards all - Will

PS - to tie the Baltimore threads together, quick update on Jay Finglass, formerly of Jay's in Towson (now Timonium). He is out of the card business, still doing day-trading and developing a fantasy football league/program. Is somewhat reclusive, according to his cousin.

Sorry that I didn't respond earlier. I just saw this !!! Great topic !!!

I'm in the Baltimore/Washington area also. I had coordinated a meeting at the Chantilly show in July. It worked out very well. I was the puny looking slob in the group !!!

I'd be willing to meet with anyone(s). There's a big show coming up at the Baltimore convention center in January that might be a good opportunity for have a mini Net54 get together. Or any other time we can figure out...

It's interesting that you brought up Jay Finglass. I had always been curious to know "Where are they now ?" with him. I was one of his very first customers when he opened up a really small baseball card store in Towson, Maryland. He used to live near me, too. When he was a dealer, I was one of his most frequent buyers. He used to take lots of time from the store to go sking frequently. Did he ever get married & have kids ? I liked Jay... When I knew him, he wasn't that "distant" - he was friendly, outgoing, etc,...

Sure, it's a huge card & autograph show celebrating Cal Ripken going into the HOF as well as the 1983 World Champions Orioles reunion...

I'm sorry I've been slow to reply, but I've had a full plate (for me) getting ready for the possible flooding from Ernesto, trying to find where I can get my carfixed for a reasonable price (LOL)(currently not drivable, due to steering linkage probs, and trying to organize my autograph stuff as I mentioned in a recent post. (Thanks, again, to everyone who emailed me about the auto stuff...I really appreciate it.

Anyway, I've got to conserve my energy capacity (the Lyme thing),and try to get things accomplished in a workable way, so I will try to get back to many of you in this post by email, as soon as I get through the upcoming storm.

I do know for sure that I will be at the Arundel Mills show in Anne Arundel County MD on Sept. 10th (Sunday) with a buddy who will be picking me up at my house and driving down to the show (I'm in the Reisterstown/Finksburg area BTW, between Owings Mills and Westminster, if that means anything to some of you.

Most of these Mall shows have been reall duds around my area in the last few years, but there is a chance that a fellow by the name of Bob Flitter (heck of a nice guy) from Jenkinstown, PA will be there. He has a wonderful collection of vintage items, many high end items, most of which I couldn't afford, even if I was buying.

At the last Arundel show I went to earlier this month, I would say in his little 3 8' table set up, he had over 500K mkt value of Prewar items (actually I'll have to include his '49-'52 Bowmans in that guess. Some super nice T cards stand out in my recollection. I'll call himand see if he's coming in case that would interest anyone. I'll post whether he'll be there under a new topic "Bob Flitter" when I find out.

I don't like to keep posting that I'm in an unusual life situation (Lyme and very modest means, but since not everyone reads every post, I'll just say for the last time that I am in a "forced sale" situation. and my collecting days are likely over.

Anyway, I was "bowled over" by the nice replies from all of you, so thanks again, and as I try to maintain and reestablish some degree of stability in my life I hope to take many of you up on the chances to get together and shoot the breeze.

Best to everyone.

Bob

Hi Bob, I just moved from Reisterstown (40 years of my life) to Freelend which is just off of I83 next to Parkton. I too work in Woodlawn which is the West side of Baltimore and not nice after the sun goes down. During the week at lunch time is best for me. Dan Mckee.
