Thumbs up My latest picks

Going to a show on Saturday. The Spinks brothers will be there. Picked these up for them to sign.

Grabbed the Ali just because it's a fun card.

Mike, that's not a Louis RC; PSA is just ignorant. Those sport wallet cards were a UK issue from the 1930s, not 1930. Louis was 16 years old in 1930 and years away from turning pro. This is the Louis RC:

I just picked up the small version.

This would also probably be considered a RC, since the bio indicates a 1935 issue date:

There's also this Detroit Free Press premium issued for a week in the summer of 1935:

I was happy about these two pickups. I'm now a T225 Leach Cross from completing that set.

The Ogden's Series A pickup leaves me four short of now having that set:

76 Jack O'Brien
77 Jem Smith
78 Jim (Jem) Mace
93 Kid McCoy

I love both of these sets. There's some real stunning T225 cards especially.

Let me know if anyone has any of the above cards!

Default T218 Tolstoi

Thanks, David and Brent. Yeah, I was underselling a little bit. I only have a few of these, but I look for them all the time. The non-boxer ones seem even scarcer...Here's another I have, not a new one...regards, Rob

Default Louis Rookies

Hey Adam, you're right. Joe went pro in 1934. It is still possible the strip is from 1935- though I now am not really sure of the exact date of the issuing. Still a cool card. I like that Max and Joe are on the same strip.

Here is my favorite Louis Rookie.

Hate to burst your bubble, but that is another PSA mistake. The set was issued with an album. The album has write-ups about the subjects. In the Joe Louis section it states he has defended his title 19 times. His 19th defense was 1941. The album cover also references Louis as World Heavyweight Champion, which he wasn't in 1935.

Right now we have a Gans SGC 60 and a Jeffries SGC 20. Possible we end up with more. Also a lot of other really tough cards. It is shaping up to be a card-centric auction.

Thanks; I'd never seen it before and thought it really popped. There are some great cards coming out of Japan over the last few decades. I love this B-Hop RC from the same set as the Pac-Man RC:

and this 1982 Sanchez:

More winning designs from Japan, from BBM:

I know the fight was a dud but this card really caught my eye: I love die cut designs. It is a little taller than a standard baseball card:

Just started collecting Boxing cards over the last month. This what I've got so far:

As you can see I'm kind of a fan of Floyd Patterson.

No action here since October? Shameful...

I picked up some modern cards:

1996 Ringside promos:

Here's a HOFer with no other cards I can find:

GGG's 2016 'RC':

Though I like this 2015 'Broder' a lot more:

I was really excited to find this guy. As a bit of a budget collector, I'm always really happy when I can add one of Johnson's cards to my small Johnson collection. I love the photo. I wonder if the pic was taken after a fight as his left eye seems swollen.

Been meaning to pick up a nice Ali type card for a while. I was able to grab this in the LOTG auction. Really nice looking card when you have it in your hand.

That's a beauty. It's funny but I always thought that of all the Paninis that one looks the least like him.

From a set of ten cards for a UK music compilation. The set also includes Carl Froch and Tyson Fury, neither of which have other cards I know of:

I cannot wait to see this guy lock horns with Chocolatito later this year:

That Johnson card is one of my all time favorites. I've been on the lookout for one for some time. I've been collecting the Wills set and really like it. Maybe even my favorite overseas issue.

If anybody has any extra Wills please let me know!

Picked up this photo from Historic Images. Guy on the right is identified as promoter Dave Hawkins, who I could find no info on as of yet.

Fighter on the left which is unidentified, I am almost positive is a very rare image of Top Middleweight contender "Panama" Joe Gans who was blocked by the color barrier at the time from fighting for the World Title.

Did hold the "Colored" Middleweight title on more then one occasion. Beat rival Tiger Flowers twice.

Blind studio stamp on the photo indicates a Cleveland photo studio. Gans may have stopped there on his way to fight Flowers in Toledo in 1923.....or the studio may have traveled to Toledo for the fight, which was somewhat of a big deal at the time.

Thanks Adam, saw that image before. Almost looks like Kid Norfolk to me. I based the ID on the following photo, but the more I look at it now, the more I think I might be wrong.

Then I also found this one which makes me even more unsure...

Other similar fighters who fought extensively in the Ohio area during that time include Jamaica Kid and Tut Jackson, but I can't find anything on them who would match this guy either.

Never got around to posting this in the "finds" thread. These Stevengraphs are really little works of art. Still haven't figured out if I want to remove it from the frame.

Thanks Adam, I meant the guy on the Cuban Panama Joe Gans card looked a lot like Kid Norfolk, who's definitely not my guy.

Guess it will probably go in the dreaded "Unidentified" photo box, which seems to be getting filled with more and more photos then I care to admit.

Bunsens are tough to find. I got one at the National a few years ago and was very pleased.
