Default Jim Kaat as a Pirate?

I've now seen four negatives from the Topps Vault showing Jim Kaat as a Pirate. Topps lists all of them as being from 1984. I've looked everywhere for information about what Kaat's association with the Pirates was, but I can't find anything. Was he a coach? Did he try out in spring training but not make it with the team? Thanks.

Paul, according to "The Pittsburgh Pirates Encyclopedia" Jim Kaat tried out for the Bucs in 1984 but was let go before the season started.

Default Kaat

I saw those negatives and wondered too - found a story about his release in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette archives which are available free via Google News.
