The photo is fronm the ?National League Stars book put out by SABR--they accidentally sent me two--a hardback and a softback, so I ripped out a page from the softback. Voila.

Hey, I always wanted to name a son Mathewson, for my love of the great pitcher. Is that what brought the inspiration for the name? Not trying to hijack the strand, this is just a quick question.

Maybe we can start a strand to list the names of family members named after our favorite sports (Pre-WWII) players.

Yes. Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner, and my father were the inspirations for the naming of my son, Mathewson Lee Wagner Parks.

We used to have a board member named Dan Mathewson, a distant relative of the pitcher. Used to....

Mathewson "Jaws" Parks, huh? (or is the shark more generic?)
Nicest Mathewson so far!

Guess that I have been on a supplement and premiums kick lately.

I admit to bias, but bias or not, this circa 1914 issue contains some of the most striking baseball artwork that I have ever seen. This Mathewson example leads the way. I am currently researching the set and would love to hear from anyone with any knowledge of it.

The tag line at the bottom reads "From the Evening Sun's Gallery of Famous Baseball Players." They measure approximately 9-1/4 by 12 inches.

Regards,
Lyman

Thanks Dan. The Piedmont back is clean but probably 70/30 centering. I likely will have it slabbed as it's one of the nicest T205 I've ever had. Dennis

I'm waiting on my first Matty still.

My parents wern't inspired by Adrian "Cap" Anson when naming me. However, it would make for a good story.

I would consider Tristan for a name but it seems like a sure-fire "get-your-butt-kicked-at-school" name. I don't think calling him the gray eagle would help either.

Awesome signed Matty. Please send it to Canada immediately.

I have scans of the dust jackets for the books which you may not have seen which I can send to you, or if E doesn't notice, I can even post here when I get to my home computer.<br />I'll also post a scan of the first edition Putnam

When I bought the Matty book off of eBay a couple of years ago the seller stated up-front that the signature was not authentic. When I took possession of the book it looked like a damn good forgery if indeed it was. I am not convinced either way. Wish I could state unequivocably that it is the genuine article but I can't.

Can you send me your email address again? The putnam with the signature is a later printing. I have seen those boards printed in both 1918 and 1926. If a 1926 printing, Matty would have had a tougher time signing it, due to his death in 1925. What does printing does the copyright page indicate?
