Default 1933 Goudey Set: Price Help

Posted By: Chris

Thanks to the Reading show, I have just completed my 1933 Goudey Set. Yea... I do not have the current SCD bible, my book store is surprisingly sold out. Could someone who has the book please tell me the value range listed for the set in all conditions. Also, the new Beckett value range too. Your help is much appreciated. Time to start 1934.

Chris

If you give me an approximate grade average for the whole set I will give you the most accurate value of your set, does it include the Lajoie?

I will respond to what you requested without asking condition or asking for an email.

NM_110,000
EX__37,500
VG__19,500

That is from the 2008 Standard Catalog.

Thanks guys. No it doesn't include the Lajoie, unfortunately. The set is about 40% graded averaging 4.5, both PSA and SGC. The set is consistent and I am thrilled to finally have it complete minus the Lajoie. Thanks again to all the dealers at Reading who helped me fill in the holes.

The totals, by grade, of the individual card values listed in PSA's Sports Market Report for the 1933 Goudey set are as follows:

VG-EX ...... $46,595
EX ........... $75,710
EX-MT .... $109,990
NM ......... $170,880
NM-MT .... $458,300
MT ....... $1,297,650

Without #106 Lajoie the values are:

VG-EX ....... $29,095
EX ............ $51,710
EX-MT ....... $74,990
NM .......... $128,880
NM-MT ..... $398,300
MT ........ $1,177,650

This is for graded cards of course.

Common cards that are relatively scarce in high grade (so-called condition rarities) typically sell for significantly more than their SMR values.

All PSA 4 cards

$40,229.37
#106 $17,250

All PSA 5

$71,083.61
#106 $31,719.60

The top price for each grade includes the Lajoie card #106 in the total so you would have to back out that value. So in your case a 4 set would be $23K and 5 is $40K.

Bobby -- just curious, did you base your totals on the last sale recorded for each card, or on some kind of average of recent sales, in cases where you had more than one sale recorded for a particular card/grade?

Eric,

It is still the last card for now. We just put in the new price system a few weeks ago that is showing for cards only. Currently working on making the average show for the My Collection as well as searches like the one I just did.

Ok, good. I like to look at averages because they tend to smooth out price differences due to cards that are unusually strong or weak for their grade, and other factors. In any case, it is interesting that SMR and VCP are reasonably close on the total values for the Goudey set. I think that suggests that while VCP reflects the reality of what is going on in the market, SMR remains one of the primary engines driving buyers' expectations, and thus the prices that are actually realized.
