Default T5 uncataloged player ?

I was just wondering how rare it is to come up with a number and player in T5 that doesn't appear on any of the obvious checklists.

I won't pretend the question is merely hypothetical -- I found one at the National (I am not currently looking to sell). I have been kind of assuming that all T5s are so scarce that a totally unknown one isn't that remarkable, but maybe that's not the case. Any thoughts from the experts will be appreciated.

Hey Tim
I am far from an expert on them but since I still need an upgrade for mine (it's on a weird mount) I watch out for them. I would guess it will bring a premium but not a whole lot. I don't know of anyone doing the set (whatever that would consist of). There are some series that are so scarce, as you know, that new cards pop up from time to time. I am still looking for a nice HOF'er for not a lot of money.

Default I love the set

Have never seen or heard of an uncatalogued example but not surprised. Many examples are not known to exist even though they are check listed. You may be able to find someone to pay a premium but I kind of doubt it would be much of one.

I think new examples could be uncovered. It's a complex set, not unlike the OJs. And with Minor Leaguers. An old Standard Catalog checklist said the checklist probably wasn't complete and there may be new examples found in the future. I would some examples are one-of-one in the market.

Default T5s

If my memory is correct, I remember hearing that more than one player were assigned the same number in this set. Production was very sloppy from standard mounts to construction paper mounts.

In about 1995 I came accross about 20 T-5's ina flea market in Pennsylvania. The grouop consisted of a complete set of Toledeo players which are at the very end of the T5 checklist The key card in the lot was Joe McCarthy the Hall of Fame Yankee manager as a player for Toledo. In that lot was the C. Winger Number 1613. Winger is the last card in the current T5 checklist but notice there is a gap from 1115 Gilligan (Toledo) and 1613 Winger of almost 500 cards!!!. That fall I ran into a a fellow collector who's opinion I have always valued (he runs a very successful auction from Watchung NJ) and showed the card to him. He told me basicly what Leon told you, that because there were so many gaps in the T5 checklist and that most of the scarce cards are of minor leauge players that very few folks collect he felt it would have a small premium over a common in the set. In about 2003 when my Dad needed some funds he auctioned off the Toledo set and the Winger and Winger brought a very small premium. There are just no collectors going after the T5 set. That said there are some factors that could make an Uncataloged T5 valuable. For Example if it is the only card of a player that played in the Majors so collectors who try and get every player who ever played on their favorite team might fight over it. But for the most part my experiance says not a card folks are willing to pay a significant premium for.

Regards
Jonathan

I gave those T5's a home for about 7-8 years before selling them. My interest in the lot was more McCarthy than Winger and I wouldn't have placed a huge premium on Winger. They were in fantastic shape if I remember correctly.....

I wonder if this is the McCarthy from that lot. I obtained it from a board member in a trade but don't remember who my trading partner was.

Certinly could be all of the cards except the Winger were Toledo players with nice mounts. The Doubles were sold off over time mostly at Willow Grove Pa. show in the mid Nineties. The same year at Willow Grove I bought 5 different Philadelphia American players all HOFers that had been removed from their mounts and stored in an envelope. The seller had more all Philadelphia American leauge. The photos were all in wonderful shape with minor glue marks on back. Once a fellow collector suggested that I take off the toledo players off of their mounts and replace them with the Philadelphia Hall of famers to increase their value. But I cannot even bring myself to clean wax stains off cards. Besides these look fine.

Default T5 Jimmie O'Rourke

Has anyone ever seen a Pinkerton T5 Cabinet for Jimmie O'Rourke of Columbus A.A.? The card number is #1060. Just wondering if one exists since I haven't been able to locate an example.
