For what I collect I still need a D351 and D355. I know where I can get a D351 (Grennan Baking) probably, but no sense selling the farm to get it if I don't have tabs on a D355, which is an E101 with a purple stamp on the back. Four of them were brought into a coin shop about 2 yrs ago and I never could track one down once they left. Such is life...

I know Ed very well. I don't know if he has seen one but I will guess, no. One was in a Lipset auction about 12 yrs ago,. It's the only one I have ever seen for sale. I won several other extremely rare cards in that auction so didn't go for that one. Little did I know I would never see another for sale *(yet).

I know the person that bought that one and the person he sold it to. I hope I never own that one because it means another hobbyist will have passed away. I don't see the current owner ever selling it. I do have high hopes though, as at least 10-20 are documented in Egan's reference manual on Early Candy cards.

Anyone know why SCG calls these E121 rather than D327?

Here are both my back variations:

Interesting Kenny. Your Zach has font alignment different from Rhett's--his must be a different type back?

I only own one:

Obviously, PSA bungled the codification of this card as 1917, rather than 1921. But, for what it is worth, Mastro didn't pick up on this error, either, when it auctioned the card off six years ago

I'm quite sure I overpaid, but I'm not clear that there are really a lot of Stengel Phillies cards out there...

Could be. Mine is a Holsum back. I see what you mean the front row and second row line up differently. You have a sharp eye.

Todd mine is the Type 2 back, while his has the Type 1 back. ALSO, note that his name changed from "Zack" on Kenny's card while mine has it changed to "Zach".

Is the way the back faces what determines the type? Which type of back is more valuable? Thanks Rhett.

I think my WaJo has a Type 1 back - but I can't check it readily, as it is in my safe deposit box.

Nice card Val. Yours is the same Type back as Kenny's--note the wide space between the "H." and the "Weil" (compare to the Pinch Thomas card I posted above, as well as the Deal and the Sisler too).

Default Holsum

I love the Holsum Bread cards. Rhett has a great article in issue #29 of Old Cardboard that explains the issue quite well.

Todd, thanks for the insight. So, am I correct in thinking there are 4 different back combinations - i.e., the wide vs. small space between the "H." and the "Weil" along with top-to-bottom read vs. the bottom-to-top read?

Default Holsum

More Holsum stuff -

Leon, I just noticed that your card isn't listed on the SGC pop report. That is kind of strange. Also, it is a 1920, not a 1921.

Also, Scott's card is the only 1920 card listed on the SGC pop report. Am I crazy or is this a 1921 card?

Also, Todd's Bancroft card has a 1920 back, but the front says "Nationals", rather than the team name. Rhett's article in OCB says that the 1920's have team nicknames, and the 1921's say either "Americans" or "Nationals", but this card seems to break that rule.

Rick
-Leon's is in fact a 1920 card.

-Scott's Sisler is the 1921 version.

-Not all cards follow a neat pattern when it comes to the team nicknames, most teams are simply "Americans" or "Nationals" but many (only type Type 1's from what I have seen) have the specific team nickname listed, also seen most commonly with the Chicago cards having "Cubs" or "White Sox" listed, (I didn't mean to imply anything else in the article if it comes across that way).

I was just looking at my spreadsheet for the "Known" Type 1's (at least known to me) and I don't think I ever realized that the only teams I have down in Type 1 that have the specific team nicknames are for Chicago ("Cubs" and "White Sox") and St Louis ("Browns" and "Cardinals"). I'm not saying there will never be any teams found with their nicknames, only that I haven't seen them, the other Type 1's I have documented say "Americans" or "Nationals" only, interesting.

Default 1921 Holsum - Heilmann

Here's my Holsum...I believe this card is uncatalogued in the SCD Guide, although I have seen it checklisted elsewhere online.

I like that the front is technically like the 1917 E135 issue and not the 1921 E121 issue. I say this for two reasons: (1) His name is spelled correctly "Heilmann" vs. "Heilman" and (2) the position shows "1st B." and not "R.F."

I think mine was graded a long time ago. That is probably the reason it's not listed, if it isn't.
