Default Major Museum Baseball Memorabillia Exhibit Opens in NYC

Posted By: bruce Dorskind

Board Members:

Last night more than 1,200 VIPS, legandary Dodger, Giant
Yankee players and fans attended the private opening
of The Glory Days of Baseball (1947-1957) exhibit

The exhibit tells the story of when New York was not only
the capital of the world, but the capital of baseball as
well. Between 1947-1957 a New York team was in
the World Series a total of 10 (missing only 1948)
and won 7 World Series (Yankees 5, Dodgers 1, Giants 1)

Rare memorabillia from some of the country's most
distingusihed collectors including Stephen Wong,
Gary Cypress and Bill Gladstone was on display,

In addition to an endless array of items from the
Glory Days era, you will find a number of 19th
century New York area team cabinets, early Negro
League items and stunning examples of Mint
early Topps baseball cards.

We were proud to be a major lender to the exhibit
and look forward to your visit.

It's on 5th Avenue in Mahattan near the corner of 103rd Street. It's on display throughout the summer, but I'm not sure of the closing date.

Edited to add Museum of the City of New York.

Check out website. Looks like a great exhibit. I already obtained the exhibit companion book. It is a beauty.

I attended the opening and was really impressed with the material there. Great show design, fun stuff, a real window into what baseball and New York were like in the 1950s. A must-see, I'd say, with something for everyone. (Great NY Negro League stuff revolving around Jackie Robinson; amazing advertisements; Mays's silver slugger award, which was spectacular.)

One highlight: Penny Marshall was there, along with the niece of one of the WW II-era female ballplayers. (I forget the player's name; there are a few artifacts from the WW II era, before the 1947-1957 stuff starts.) Nice to see the living link to history. (Not to mention the free Nathan's hot dogs and beer.)

David

That's a pretty cool idea, but we have to check museum hours, and we will be on 103rd and 5th. Any good restaurants we know of up there?

Could also be a Saturday afternoon and a lunch.

It’s “our new favorite” declare early visitors to this “tiny” Northern Italian, a recent import from Nantucket, that has settled in “just across from the 92nd Street Y”; given the “wonderful” rustic fare and “gracious” sensibility, it’s no surprise that you must “make reservations.”

Here's a pretty nice review of the exhibit, with lots of pics:

Mike, that's a great idea. I know the area well (I go to the park a few blocks south at least once a weekend). I'm free after next week during the week; dates?

If we do it during the week the museum may close at 5:00. We have to check that. Does that work for you people with real jobs?

Michael- why don't you just call in well!

Tell the boss you are feeling great and you don't want to ruin it by coming to work.

I think it was from a Tom Robbins book. He's a bit of a cult writer if you are not familiar with him. I always thought that it was clever, so I stored it in the joke bank.

I love Tom Robbins' books.

And Barry I'm on for sometime before 5. Good excuse to get the hell out of the office. Michael, I'm older than you so perhaps I can write you a note.

If I drink early it's likely to be a milkshake.
