Default T206 player Selection

Been doing some research on the players
in my modest T206 collection and have found
some that are/were certainly less than big name guys
for they're time .Charlie Starr comes to mind.
Has they're ever been anything written on how or why
players were selected and others not ?
Were those who appeared on cards compensated for
they're images ?
Guess you can tell that I'm relatively new to T206 and
would like to learn more . If anyone can supply any links
that provide interesting information on their history/story
I would very much appreciate it.
Just want to add that though my collection is small, I think
they're great !!!
Thank ,
Ken
