Default RJ Hill - Tris Speaker??

Posted By: Geno

Happy New Year everyone!

I just saw this on Ebay.uk:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=008&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=180069515483&rd=1&rd=1

I picked one up last year and wasn't sure what it was. I have since found out that it is a 1934 issue that is relatively scarce. Commons from the set go for about 10 Pounds ($20), so this may not be a stretch at $200. I would still love to know if anyone has any idea who the player is or anything else about the photo. Last year, somebody thought it was Tris Speaker, but wasn't sure...any opinions?

Cheers,
Geno

Same image is used on the circa 1915 Susini Universal Album Cuban card. It is believed to be Speaker on that issue, but I don't think the Susini identifies the player.

By the way, this card comes with different backs - mine just says "Sports" where this one says "Sports Series."

Take Care, Geno

Dave --

I am basing my "scarce" comment on the Murray Price Guide, which is rather like the Beckett of British cards. Commons from this set go for 10 Pounds, whereas commons from the Churchmans Sports and Games set that feature Babe Ruth go for 2.30 (these are from a 2001 guide). I didn't mean to imply that it was super rare, but you see a lot more Ruth cards than you ever see of this one. Your card has the more common back, which is in the book as a 4 Pound set for commons. The way their price guide works, it doesn't break out any expensive cards the way Beckett or Lemke guides do, so it won't list baseball issues seperately - that's why I'm using the commons price to gauge the scarcity. Anyway, it is a cool card!

Take Care, Geno
