Default T206: Would you rather?

Would you rather have a high grade T206 HOFer (Matty / Johnson / Cobb) Not a Wagner / Plank, etc. or would you rather have a low grade common with a tough back (uzit / drum / broadleaf) etc.

I go for neither -- beauty of the card (including image, color and centering) most important. Could be, say, Lajoie with bat--or Bob Bescher portrait.

While I appreciate the high grade stuff, I like my vintage to look vintage (prefer good to very good) so I'll take the rare back for the variety of it.

To each his own, but I vote for rare back just because they are much more difficult to obtain. It's all about the chase...

Kinda depends on the collector... more jazzed about high grade, or more jazzed about tough backs. And a factor would be whether the collector already has the tough backs or good HOFer cards.

Either would be fine. I have some tough backs, but I'd probably go for a drum or Uzit before a high grade HOFer. Bl 460 too, but not 350.

Higher grade HOFer. I collect pictures of baseball men, not tobacco advertisement.

Although I love me some rare backs, the proof is in the pudding and numbers don't lie...A beautiful HOF over an obscure back any day of the week. I agree with David's comment.

I am a back collector. Fronts are cool too and when you have a top tier HOF'er with a tough back it's all the better. But I would pick a tough back first.

Default Would rather have high grade HOFers

I would much rather have the high grade card. But I collect Baseball PLAYER cards, not cigarette BRAND advertisements.

But that's just me and my preference.

I selected High grade star with a common back. In truth I would rather have a mid/lower grade star card and be able to pick up a few additional commons in the same condition.

Default Another vote for the higher grade HOFers

High grade superstar over a rare back. Adding just about anything from the June Goodwin auction would make my year. Won't happen but I can dream

Best regards,

Joe

I'd be happy with either, but I chose low grade common with tough back. Low grade meaning VG'ish.......not tore up "poor".....

I can only speak for myself but it's not just "the back", it's the combination of the player on the front along with the tobacco add on the back together- some combinations are scarce, even if the tobacco add on the back isn't one of the toughest backs (like this Bresnahan portrait with EPDG back):

I voted for high grade HOFs as well but I'm happy to have one mid grade with a "rare" back..

rare backs are great and all but for me a nice t206 matty trumps a tougher back any day of the week.

I won't say backs are overrated, anyone can collect whatever they chose... For myself however; I am a fan of the sport first and foremost... Cycle, drum, and Carolina brights had very little affect on the game of baseball, Cobb, Young, Johnson and the likes are known even today 100 years later by every little leaguer in the country.

For me, I'll take the guys that sculpted the actual game, not the tobacco companies. That said, I love the extra depth of knowledge and sophistication the rare backs add to the set, and it's ambiance.

I see the appeal in collecting rare backs. However for my collection, I'll take an affordable mid grade over either.

Agree with David R and Leon..

Why not have both? Best of both words in my opinion! Nothing better than a rare back hall of famer

The way I see it, the more money I spend on an Uzit of a common player, the less I have to spend on a Cobb or a Wagner. Those are the cards I really want to own.

When you show off your collection, it's more impressive to have a HOF card everyone recognizes, than to show the reverse of a card with an Uzit advertisement no one recognizes but the most hardcore of collectors.
