Default "W" card questions....

Posted By: Mike Williams

I'm curious how many out there collect "W" cards and if so, which issue(s)? For those that don't, why (crude images, hand cut appearance/inflated grades etc.)?

I don't collect these, but decided I really liked the multi-colored (blue, red) "Speaker batting" card and wanted to use it as my HOF card of him. I don't remember the year/designation, but it's the same pose as his T206. I haven't been able to find one in clean EX condition to purchase. Anyone want to trade/sell?

No, I've been looking all over ebay for an example - (they come up about once a month)- but can't find any. It's red, blue and white, but the colors are placed a little differently from the t206. w522 sticks in my head for some reason.

Have one W590 Ruth "King of the Bat".
Bought it back in 1993 from Slater's Political Gallery Auctions.

BTW, 2 E300 here... (No E107's...)

Cobb and Arnold Hauser.

I only collect the W600's.....actually should be M600's or something since they were issued by Sporting Life Magazine. Have had many W strip cards. Bought a collection of about 300 a while back. Interesting, but just don't capture the imagination that much. They do sell okay if you're in them for the right price. Hard to buy period Ruth and Cobb stuff for the prices the strip cards bring so guess that's some appeal for some folks. Still pretty hard to find in really primo condition unless strips or sheets. Does PSA grade them? I know SGC does.......

I ave about 35 W cards but i dont really collect them...i think because they are crude images and are blank backs and usually handcut badly, they arent popular, but its a cheap way to pick up hall of famers...i have 4 w512,5 w515 including heilmann,2 w516-2,5 w521 incl. wilbert robinson and 7 w572 and a few others i never checked off in my book, that are stuffed in the back of my safe

Are you referring to the "Cobb Scratching" card?

would be considered crude now wouldn't it! I was referring to the images themselves on some issues (i.e. clarity, color, likeness of subject etc.). Take care!

The card in question would be the W551. Not identical, but fairly close.

I like the W517's and have Grove and Terry. Many are the same photos as Exhibit cards. I have a few W560's, but I'm not a real fan of them in general because they look so cheap.

A non-vintage set I wouldn't mind seeing would be "infamous moments in baseball", including the Alomar spitting, a combined Ryan/Ventura card, ball bouncing off Canseco's head for HR, Rocker talking card, Daryl Strawberry mug-shot, Marge Schott's dog (or game-used fur card), special game-used insert card with Howard Johnson cork, and a cross-over Knight throwing chair card. Other ideas?
