still shocked no one has commented on my observation, that this board, which seems to be overwhelmingly in favor of "raw" cards, during discussions and many of you constently bash grading companies...YET, only 12% prefers raw cards...61 people out of almost 500...this baffles me...

anyway. my vote is for a new poll...topic to be determined...

I'm with John S. here is our new poll:

How do people like to collect:

1) PSA-8 (SGC 88) or better
2) PSA 6-7 (SGC 80-84)
3) PSA 3-5 (SGC 40-60)
4) Less than PSA 3 (SGC 40)
5) raw cards

Seems like an issue we are actively debating.

there are problems with such a simple cut & dry poll..

which one do i click? i collect T206 8's, but i also collect rare variations, rare backs, etc...most are graded 3-5...

as much as i love my 8's, and actively pursue them...i still get a kick out of holding a low-grade drum, uzit, or o'hara...i love this hobby, and am pretty knowledgable about vintage cards...but i cannot just simply click one of those choices, as i am sure some of you can't either...

maybe the answer is to have a few more categories...

ONLY collect high grade
ONLY collect low grade
collect high grade and low grade rarities

?

I'm after the highest grade I can find. And afford. But if I'm after something, and it is 1 of 10 in existance, sometimes a grade 1 or 2 will have to do. I may never see another one. And that's ok. So it would be difficult to be put into any one slot. But we can try it.

I think Barry's categories would be fine. My prewar collection averages GD-VG but is not exclusive to cards in that range. Maybe a poll discussing the average condition of one's collection?

But, wording the question will be a challenge. An example;

I'll always be a ghettoboy, buying raw, tired HOF's and have them graded. Results; P-F-G-VG (1,2,3 and rarely 4). I have a few high-grade vintage, but they always seem uppity, stay locked in and won't hang with the unassuming Welfare stock.

I think with Barry's suggestion there is too much overlap in the catagories. For example I have cards in each of the catagories 2 through 5 and like them equally. For there to be a catagory "all of the above" would be meaningless.

I think that Bob's soaking thread brought out a lot of comment on both sides of that question. While it got off track and it was hard to tell how many approved and how many disapproved I think it might be an interesting poll.

If you do a "soaking" poll it should be very strictly limited to that question and that question alone. Any other manner of "alteration" should not be included.

My 2 cents.

Maybe you could add a few more categories to my list of five, and each collector could pick more than one because of the overlap. But keep in mind if 99% of one's collection is VG, and 1% is PSA-8, then you could just click "VG" and leave it at that. Lots of surveys, however, allow you to click more than one choice.

...about click polls where you can only vote once is you get an idea about what a certain group thinks about a certain topic. If you allow people to vote more than once, or if you have to answer "C, but on Wednesday's it's B or A," then your question wasn't worded carefully.

I tried to have a black or white poll a few weeks ago -- quality vs. quantity. And people wanted to define quality to mean high grade or ultra scarce, while others said they were both. I think the click poll questions should be as black and white as possible:

How about -- Do you agree that low-to-mid grade collecting is becoming less and less important to the hobby in my judgment

Or...

Do you believe that PSA 8 and above collectors are the backbone of the pre-war baseball card hobby?

Apologies if any of these have been polled before...

1) What do you consider to be the most offensive/inexcusable form of card alteration? trimming, soaking, coloration, corner building, ironing out wrinkes, etc

2) What is the most important factor that determines your purchase of a card? need it for a set, condition, eye appeal, 3rd party grade assigned, priced right, etc...

3) Are you a fan/history buff of the period you collect? or do you just collect the cards? this is a tough one to phrase, but you see what I mean

4) What percentage of your collection would you consider "core" vs ancillary/misfits? 10%, 25%, 50%, etc...would just be interesting to see how many people consider themselves focused/disciplined

5) Given the recent month or two of rather anxiety-filled posts, it would be interesting to hear: How concerned are you about the future of this hobby and its ability to maintain its integrity? not at all concerned, somewhat concerned, very concerned, etc...nevermind...that one sucks

anyway, just some thoughts

How about a simple agree/disagree:

1. I prefer to collect condition scarcities, reasonably available cards that are rare in high condition, or

2. I prefer to collect scarce cards, regardless of condition.

Or how about:

1. I collect individual cards that I can appreciate for either their scarcity or for their condition, or

2. I am a set builder and even if I complete a set, I am trying to obtain the best or highest grade example I can find, or

3. I am a set builder but will pretty much leave it alone once I have completed a set.

The last pole also was difficult for me to answer because i like my cards raw as much as i do graded. Some i prefer out of holders, some in. but since the question posed was which grading company i prefer i answered with the grading company id most likely use if i were to use one.

I like Jason L and Richard Masson's questions. While I appreciate Barry's I think there is too much overlap for a lot of collectors. I personally collect in all 5 categories. Very few of us are PSA 8 only.

Jim is right that there is too much overlap but I think what we are trying to determine is who the so-called backbone of the hobby is. We need to come up with categories that don't necessarily run together, maybe more a philosophy of how one collects and not the PSA grade...but "pond scum" seems like the best category so far.

1. Favorite NYC restaurant

2. Favorite political party

3. Favorite thread which degenerated into massive personal attacks

4. Most difficult (for no good reason) "common" card you've tried to find

5. How we catalog our collections (written/spread sheet/index cards/etc.)

6. Age when we bought our first vintage card

Peace (to a point)

1. Favorite or most respected vintage card dealer?

2. Most underated dealers?

3. Favorite auction houses?

4. Individual set focus in 2007?

5. Missing/needed vintage publication or book?

6. What will be the next area in vintage that see a spike?

7. Does anyone use NAXCOM?

8. What can SCD do to make it a worthwhile publication again?

9. Improvements grading companies can make?

10. Johnson length vs. high grade / low grade preference?

All are more valuable than simply whether or not you are a high or low grade collector.

I am leaning toward the most votes for a new poll to be based on condition of the cards we collect. Again, it's by popular vote and this seems to be one of them and very "in the news" the last few days on the board. Maybe we can refine this:

How do you like to collect (main focus):

1) PSA-8 (SGC 88) or better
2) PSA 6-7 (SGC 80-84)
3) PSA 3-5 (SGC 40-60)
4) Less than PSA 3 (SGC 40)
5) raw cards
6) a mixure of high and low
7) best I can obtain on my budget, regardless of slabbed or not
8) grade doesn't matter if I am filling a hole

I am still open here but let's see what we can do in the next day or so and move on it....regards

edited to add "(main focus)"

Leon- a near perfect compromise, i like it...

one thing, should we add a category for rare cards specifically on this list, or is it simply assumed or understood, that is what many of us focus on?

I say let's do Leon's poll as it is, and see where it goes. One question: are people allowed to vote more than once, or are we locked out? We don't want any ballot stuffers ("hilarious" has one "l").

Let's try this one...you guys/girls help modify it to make a good poll. If no one chimes in we'll just go with this:

How do you like to collect (main focus):

1) PSA-8 (SGC 88) or better
2) PSA 6-7 (SGC 80-84)
3) PSA 3-5 (SGC 40-60)
4) Less than PSA 3 (SGC 40)
5) raw cards but nice
6) raw cards, beaters or nice, it doesn't matter....
7- low grade cards so I can collect more cards
8) grade and/or slabbed doesn't matter if I am filling a hole or like the card

updated with request...

Per everyone's request, the new Poll is now ready. As always, you may find a link to it in the upper-left corner of the main forum page.

Also, the old polls are not deleted, rather the link to the poll is simply updated to point to the new poll instead. Those interested in seeing the final totals for the previous poll about grading companies may find it here:

To me options 1 through 4 relate to graded "slabbed" cards with a number and 5, 6 and 7 to "raw" cards. Option 8, the collector who is more interested in "filling a hole", will take them "raw" (without regard to "grade") or slabbed (without regard to what the number is). That's my collecting style. Using the word "raw" just makes it read a little easier for me to answer.

I see your point.....I asked for suggestions to amend this and no one really responded. If anyone, including yourself, can make a more cohesive poll, with the subject at hand we will use it. If I subsitute "raw" in that last one it doesn't really take into consideration that "any" grade is acceptable, which is what I was trying to get at.....I know a lot of old timer collectors fill a hole and grade isn't too important... Suggestions?

Barry- IMO, even though you don't collect anymore, you are still "in the hobby" as an auction house...i would click the category that best describes the material in your auctions...which, in a way, speaks about your taste/interests...do you agree?

p.s. Leon- is it set up so you can only vote once? hope so...
