Default New Wagner scam on eBay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honus-Wagne...EAAOSwGUpcG-l~

Can someone explain to me how this scam works? I reported it to eBay, but I'm curious on a less audacious scam how the seller makes money.

How is this less audacious? He's claiming to own a $500,000 card and selling it with 0 feedback. He won't ship for 21 days which is about the biggest red flag in history, and likely doesn't even have a counterfeit to send.

When I finally got a customer service person I could talk to, it's the way the try to reclaim money from sellers. When a scam is done the "buyer" will wait to open an "item not as described" case. The "seller" will give a false return address so the item can never be delivered but because the "buyer" followed the eBay return process, will get there money back. Then eBay will bill the "sellers" account but the seller is already gone so eBay absorbs the lose and rights it off.

It's a legit T206 Wagner, it's just not his.

One of the images he uses in the listing was lifted from this SCD article...
https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.co...-up-then-down/

He probably found the other images online as well.

The rightful owner of that card isn't going to list it on eBay...especially with a starting bid of only $500.

Which scam are you referring to? The sale or how it got a “2” when missing its corners and the creases?

It's amazing how dumb people are on both sides of this. Does the buyer actually think someone believes they'll get a $500k+ card for a couple hundred bucks? Does the seller think they won't get caught in some way? Now if it was autographed we're talking something else.

Strange, they never seem to abbreviate any other words besides reprint. I'm fine with selling reprints. but call it what it is. Not, "RP", "listing as a reprint", "unsure", or "could not verify". You know damn well it's a reprint; stop trying to take advantage of less-educated folks.

So I have to be honest. I’ve been stringing this guy along for 2 days! Telling him that I want to buy his other Wagner (he has 2 haha). We agreed on $200,000. I was supposedly wiring the money to him today. But now it will be tomorrow. I need some creative ideas to teach him a lesson. In a strange twist of irony, I got him to provide his name, address, phone number, bank info, account number, routing number, home address. Let’s hear some creative ideas! Again, he is a full fledged scammer.....

Keep telling him it's worth more than what you've agreed on and keep increasing your offer. See how high he goes.

Tell him your brother is a police officer in/near his hometown and you'll have him come by to pick up the card, that you don't trust the mail/FedEx/UPS for delivery.

Send him $200,000 in monopoly money. It seems like a fair trade for a fake Wagner.

Ask him to do a live video and send it to you with the card pictured next to a current newspaper. If he can't no deal..

^^^ Thanks Einstein. But the point was to just string him along and mess with him. I didn’t do anything too crazy. I just had him keep going back and forth in person to his bank. Like 4x today hahahaha

I just noticed another trend with these annoyingly-common reprints. Many of the auction listings are showing "Benefits Charity" next to them. I'm not sure if there's a legitimate charity counting on big dollars from a reprint, or if it's just another way to further confuse unsuspecting buyers.

As a follow up, I told him that I wired $200k to his bank account...told him it would be 24-48 hours to clear...and had him keep calling his bank and showing up in person to see if it was in there yet. I then told him that I found out it was a scam and that I wanted my $200k back and that I was going to the police. After a while, he finally half-admitted that it was a scam and we should just cancel the deal. To which I replied he still had my $200k. He advised that he never received it and he kind of started to panic. And I kind of left it at that...
