You may fault TPG for grading impossible front/back combinations.

But can you imagine how many more fraudulent cards would be in circulation if it wasn't for TPG?

People became more condition sensitive after TPGs came around imo. I don't think there'd be much of a reason to try to alter a card that already appears mint without the TPGs... So maybe less fakes being bought by hobby newcomers, but, maybe more cards being altered for a slightly better grade.
