Default Still a market for junk wax...sort of!

I'm getting ready to move, so I decided it was time to thin down the many boxes of cards I take with me every time I get a new place. In my case, this meant saying goodbye to about 10,000 doubles of junk wax, mainly 1987-1991 and especially a ton of 1989-91 Upper Deck. No Griffey rookies in the bunch but otherwise a ton of HOFers and rookies.

Needing the space more than the money at this point in my life, I put the whole lot on Facebook Marketplace for free. I half wondered if there'd be any takers, but sure enough I got about 10 inquiries in the first hour.

I've certainly heard people say half-jokingly that junk wax is so plentiful that you can't even give it away. What I found, however, is that you really can. Hopefully the new owner will enjoy this stuff as much as I did back in the day.

A friend of mine owned an apartment building where he furnished the refrigerators. At one point he decided to change them all ( 8) out and ran an add in the paper offering them free to anyone who would pick them up. He got no takers. The next week he offered them for sale for $50 and sold them all.

I saw a 1987 Topps Danny Tartabull PSA 10 go for $40 on Ebay. That could be the motivation.

So true! When I unpacked the closet I originally thought I'd get rid of a lot more stuff. Instead, I pretty much just let go of doubles. Flipping through the cards still brings back fun memories--not just of the players I loved but of heading to the card shop with my friends.

Once I'm moved in, I may try to make a binder for one set from each year of the 1980s and then keep a few out on a coffee table. Thanks to a couple of board members, I just completed my 1984 Donruss set that was missing 7 cards, and I'm anxious to see where I ended up on 1985 Donruss, which was my favorite set of the decade.

Yeah, I've been going back and buying PSA 10s of 1980s cards the past few years and it's been the most fun I've had in the hobby since I was a kid. It's like going and getting all the cards I wanted as a kid but couldn't afford.

Free cards always go quickly when I have offered them on Craigslist.

When I take them to the Goodwill, I've noticed that they never make it onto the store shelves.

When I returned to the States after being stationed overseas I bought all the new stuff I could find. Over produced but I still remember the thrill of the hunt..

Just this past weekend, I bought 3 packs of 1990 Action Packed FB for $1 each at the LCS. I opened them for the fun of it as well as the nostalgia it brought back. Just put them in with the rest of my early 1990s stuff. I would rebuy the sets from that time, but the LCS asks full BV. I'm not going to pay full BV on those. But they're fun to go through and try and put together.
