Between Mastro, SCP, Grey Flannel, Lelands, Mile High, etc....I don't feel like I have enough time (nevermind the money) to deal with all these auctions. There's like 10,000 lots for sale right now plus Ebay.

Just looking through Mastro's catalogue overwhelms me!

that the sellers are rushing to squeeze through the exits. This happens at the end of any asset price runup. I'm not saying this is the case with respect to vintage cards, but I've seen this phenomenon in other asset markets over the years.

Sincerely,

Bob S

If anything seems like fewer than normal yr-end auctions. Maybe its because Bill Goodwin and Memory Lane had theirs; I don't participate in Lelands or Grey Flannel and Superior seems to be deteriorating sharply in terms of stuff I can buy(although if you are an Old Judge collector its heaven)--did Joe Tuttle leave Superior?

Jim,

You said that if you're an Old Judge collector, it's heaven. Do you mean the volume of Old Judge cards that have been offered recently? I'm sure you didn't mean the prices of them... There have been quite a few OJs out in the past couple of years, that's for sure. It's pretty fun to just look at the different lots that become available.

Have a great remainder of your Thanksgiving evening!

Judging from prices I don't think it is folks running from a market peak; I do think that it is folks running towards a hot market with some aggressive promotional pricing by auctioneers. I know at the National I was being offered cut-rate consignor fees by major houses.

As far as which to deal with, I look at all catalogs and auction house sites I can find. You never know what will turn up or where it will surface. Some of my best deals have come from auction houses I'd not have otherwise thought to look at.

Fred,

I was referring to the number of Old Judge lots. Since its an auction, people can bid what they like.

Prices of most high-grade pre-war cards have jumped substantially in the past 6-12 months and I'm sure Old Judges are no exception.

Jim

Today I received 4 more auction catalogues, bringing the total up to 11 in the last week. Incredible! Hunts, Mastro, Lelands, American Memorabilia, Clean Sweep, Brisco, Superior, Grey Flannel, etc. Wow! What's a guy to do???

luckily (err, maybe not so luckily) im too poor to even consider betting in those big time auctions...nice to look at the catalogs and watching the bidding go to astronomical prices...but, doesnt effect me because i know i cant even touch 3/4 or sometimes all of the stuff that's up for auction

I thought the glut of auctions was going to be good for buyers. Whatever the reason, folks have flocked to the auction houses to consign their items. I believed it was good for us buyers because of the quick and abundant supply of cards, but it doesn't appear to have dampened MatroNet's auction. At least all the cards I am interested in skyrocketed pretty fast and I suspect there will be heavy bidding on the last day, as well.

I have looked at these auctions very different from what I normally do. With the funds I have, I may look for bargains to upgrade some existing cards. Normally, I would focus on cards that I do not have in my collection, but some of those elusive cards I believe I will have to overpay for and why do that if I can upgrade some cards instead with bargain shopping.

I was going to start a thread about this tonight as I wondered if others felt the same way. This is simply idiotic in my opinion. I got my Mastro catalog on Wednesday, my Lelands today, my Bricol today, I got my Grey Flannel on Monday, have three things circled in Mile High and a SCP ends about the same time. Why does everyone have to pile on at the same time? Meanwhile you basically hear crickets the months before.

Jim,

You're not kidding.... stuff has been going into newer and further orbits... In the past year or so there have been several nice OJ lots in the major auctions. I hope that the trend of more lots (not higher prices) continues for a while.

A fed ex person knocked on my door with the Lelands catalog, the mailman handed me SCP's, I opened my mailbox and found Mile High's, and I got email reminders about a couple of others. Oh yeah, and I scored three tough Exhibits on Ebay (hi Lyman, sorry we butted heads again on these--get out of my set! J/K). And that was just one day when I wasn't even supposed to be in the office. I am thrilled that I only collect cards and am not interested in any high grade postwar cards; there simply isn't enough toilet time to read all those friggin catalogs otherwise

But seriously, I wonder whether this glut of auctions will have an overall dampening effect on the average consignor's materials. I mean, the N167s and E107s of the world will set record prices, but how are the lots of T206s going to do? To me, frankly, that is a heck of a lot more relevant.

It may be that companies will partner for future auctions. Sportscards Plus and Sotheby's already have.

Speaking of catalog 'glut.' I visited the Sotheby's website looking for the current SCP auction. Sotheby's has like 15 full auctions a week.
