Default Curious about this one...

I don't do much with baseball pennants but I was curious about this White Sox pennant. I see it typically listed as 1940's but I'm guessing it's more likely from the 1950's. The base runner on it is black which i'd guess would be extremely rare to see on a pennant from the 40's...and even probably from the 50's.

It's not listed in Egner's book...but this pennant has sold very cheaply on Ebay recently. Some sales in the $20's. I paid $41 this one...Just thought it was cool. Surprised though that it's not selling for more. Is it just that common?

I like that pennant, too. I believe the whole "Go Go" thing pertained to the 1959 White Sox. So, not super super old but I agree the black player is out of the ordinary (I think).

I think it is supposed to (loosely) represent Minnie Minoso.

There is another rarer version that actually says "Go-Go Minoso".

That said, it's an undervalued pennant in my opinion. Very attractive design and with nice ties to the '59 Go-Go Sox. It is rather common, so I guess the only way to explain the low price is to surmise that everyone who wants this pennant has access to one.

Default Looking for opinions

I am interested in opinions on a Detroit pennant. It definitely appears to be an older pennant. It is 36" long and does not include the tassel length. The text type is consistent with dates pre-1920. I believe this thread also contains a pic of a 1917 New York pennant with the same woven ribbon which is the only similar example I have seen. I am reinserting that pic here. I am interested in thoughts on the age, whether it may just be a "city" pennant or if more examples of the woven ribbon are known. Any help appreciated.

Unless you have specific provenance or a photo of a fan holding one of these in the stands, I don't believe you can conclude these are sports-related. They look like City souvenir pennants, perhaps distributed at a commencement, parade or celebration of some sort.

That said, the gothic font and colors of the Detroit pennant are a better match to the Tigers than the New York Pennant is to the Giants. The Giants didn't wear black/orange until 1933, and that particular "NY" logo does not match any that the Giants ever used.

Since neither pennant has the Team Name, I don't think you can comfortably attribute either one to baseball. Still an attractive piece.

Nice score Rob...

That's my favorite Broncos Helmet by far...

Did you get that on ebay (as part of the multi-piece lot?) I think there was also a Pin and a Plaque in the grouping?

Great pickup either way,
Mark

Yeah....I've been watching that lot for weeks. I just wanted the pennant. Every time the listing ended, I'd shoot the guy a message trying to entice him to sell just the pennant. We finally agreed to a fair price on the lot. I'm hoping to get a good portion of my money back by selling the other two pieces. The helmet plaque is pretty cool...but I'm a pennant guy.

This is a 1900-1910's pennant. Common from this era to have three tassels made from silky ribbon and the oversized size. I don't believe this is spots related. Value? It depends on what it relates to

Default Seals Pennant and more

After some delay, I finally decided to frame my SF Seals Pennant. It is very large (with very long tassels) and it was difficult to find an appropriate backing that came in a large enough sheet. I liked the suede backing used in the Giants pennant (framed by a fellow board member before I bought it), but there were not many colors to choose from for such a large pennant. I decided on green for grass. I think it looks good. I took it to a shop to be framed and received an estimate of $800+, so I decided to build it online and ended up paying only about $160, even with UV protected non-glare etc... (although I had to get the suede backing elsewhere).

Just for Rob, I've also attached an image of a recent pick up that says Candlestick Park on it and is orange and black (it just is not baseball, and not a pennant).

Love the Seals pennant, Marc!

and you can't go wrong with black + orange + Candlestick.

Believe that batter image comes from the cover of the April 13, 1912 issue of The Saturday Evening Post, a painting by Robert Robinson. Here's my beat up copy. A 1915 Phillies pennant also uses the image (mine in my dreams).

Default Three pennants I have t seen before...

As seen at an antique show today.

The Yankees/Dodgers look like a repro, correct?

The two Boston ones - I have no idea if they are real. They are priced as if they are rare. Any ideas?

Default Here's a first...

Kind of annoying when you don't get re-usable shipping materials with your pennant purchases. I'm on about a dozen pennant purchase streak in which I rec'd unorthodox shipping methods. This is my first "Saran Wrap Roll" technique. My most interesting was the Honey Nut Cheerios shipping box. Anyway...No real harm done. I picked this pennant up for $20 because I wanted to experiment with stain removal on a cheap white pennant. Anyone have any experience with this endeavor? I have some nice old pennants I'd like to clean up...if possible.

They all appear to be authentic. There was a large find of the Yankees / Dodgers many many years ago, but were swallowed up into the hobby. The other two are tough, but not huge money or rare. Condition appears to be really nice though.

Default Some of my collection

Finally getting a chance to post on here. Went through this entire thread and some of the pics are outstanding!! Good to see some familiar names on here too. I'm Zach, if you see me at any of the shows at Shriner's Auditorium I'm usually carrying a bin of pennants with me. Can't wait to meet the other collectors on here, my focus is any New England sports team, any Massachusetts destination or any defunct team.

I see lots of football and baseball on here, but the spread of soccer, hockey and basketball seems to be lacking! I thought I would mix it up and post some of my nicer pieces from those sports.

Cool pennants. Thanks for sharing. I went to that Shriners Auditorium show for the first time last year. Picked up three or four football pennants there. Was really happy to see the amount of football memorabilia there.

Dunno, but I'd rather have the pennant than the $168,000 Mantle card.

Default Some recent pick ups...

Going to spread these out over several posts because I love attention. Hope you don't mind. Actually...Just not sure how many pics and words you can put in one post.

I'm mostly a football guy but have seen my pennant interests become a little more diverse recently. After spending my first four decades in CT, I moved to Houston last June and figured I should have an Astros pennant in my collection (Colts too but the seller is playing hard to get at the moment). I picked up this Astros pennant cheap. Nothing spectacular. You won't find it anywhere on Mark's wall. But I liked the look and I found it interesting that the batter was swinging at a ball that appears to be rolling past his feet. What's this guys batting average? He swings at junk. There's also a ball-less version out there...not the player, pretty sure he's intact...but he's swinging at air...no ball to be found. I might pick that one up too.

Default Another one...

Thought this was a cool addition to my small but growing baseball line up...

The prices on these next three just seemed right. A simple spine transplant on this Yankees pennant and it will be in pretty nice shape. Not bad for $35.

I'm getting into team photo pennants...

Price was right...

Default And now football...

Paid too much for this one but had to have it. Love the political incorrectness. Not in the best condition...but when will I see a better one? Queue the wise guy who's going to immediately post a nicer one.

Didn't need this one...already have it...but for an $8 buy it now? Who could resist?

I love this style of pennant...picked up a nice NM State from Rick Haskins recently as well. Anyone have any other teams...Pro or College?

And now for something completely different...My other passion is travel and New York City is one of my favorite places in the world. Picked this up as my first and only travel related pennant. Not much monetary value in it, but it reminds me of being there and that's priceless to me. I may add more...

"simple spine transplant"? Maybe for you, but I'm no Doctor.

The dude on the Astros pennant is a kindred spirit of Vlad Guerrero or Pablo Sandoval.

Default AFL, NFL and MLB Logos

Logo questions...I associate seeing an AFL or NFL logo on a pennant with the year 1966 or maybe slightly later...coinciding with the announcement of the AFL/NFL merger. And I assume AFL team pennants without the AFL logo are older than those with. Are these accurate assumptions?

For the NFL...There are pennants with the NFL logo and pennants with the NFL logo and the date 1967. From a time period standpoint, whats the difference? I seem to recall seeing pennants from 1970's, with the 1967 NFL Logo on them, so I don't think 1967 is necessarily indicative of when the pennant was produced. Anyone know the differentiation between those with just the NFL logo and those with the logo plus 1967?

For baseball, when I see the MLB logo on a pennant, I think 1970s. Is that accurate? Or did that start to appear in the late 60's?

Thanks!

Default Last post.........for now. :)

How can I tell if this is a real Keezer pennant or reproduction? I do have reproductions of this pennant and I can tell you this one is very different. Compared to the obvious reproduction, it's heavier. It's soft felt. And it's tassels are thicker and orange not black. There is no stamp on it.

I was recently on a 15 hour flight and had time to kill so I read through this entire thread...just because I had never done it and I figured I would see some great pics and learn quite a bit. I wasn't disappointed. I was, however, surprised to see Mark, a couple years back, posted a picture of this exact pennant, replete with orange tassels...as opposed to the black tassels which seem to be more common.

Go ahead...Let me have it.

I just married a Sandoval on April 29. I'll have to ask if he's a relative.

MLB logo started in 1969.

Keezers are soft with thick tassels. I have the same pennant with no stamp. Not sure of the tassel color but I think it's in this thread somewhere. That said...man!....the edges on yours look sharp for a 60+ year old pennant.

I love pennants. They are a little out of my price range, but I love looking at other collections.
