Is there any one collector who has what is considered the finest baseball pennant collection in the hobby? They don't get much press, but there must be an exceptional collection out there.

Hi Mike, I love large pennants and have about a dozen fairly old ones. But pennants are made to display and the wall space required to do that is their disadvantage. I do have probably one of the largest collections around of the small 1936-37 BF3 pennants, currently about 425 different ones. These I display in glass enclosed cases. I will try to post some pictures during the coming week.

Thank you Jim. I would love to see the large pennants, but the smalls are great as well. Anyone else have pre-war pennants to post?

Mike: I just joined tonight, and this is my first post.

I think I might have the best vintage baseball pennant collection in the world... top 3 anyway. The collection spans from turn of the century to the late '60s. It stops at the point manufacturers felt the need to cheapen / mass-produce the artwork, make them stiff instead of soft, and include the MLB Logo. Until I can figure out how to display them on the floors or ceiling however, I have had to slow it down a bit. I had hoped to create some type of memorabilia museum someday, but am doubtful that enough people would actually appreciate.

Mark,

Welcome aboard! Like Mike, I would also love to see some of your pennants as well. Anything from the Sox before 1920?

No White Sox prior to 1920, but I do have an amazing 1919 Reds Champions Pennant (kind of White Sox-Related, if you know what I mean!) I do have a very unusual White Sox Pennant from the late 20s or early 30s, and think I have most Chisox variations from the 1940s - on...

Just need to learn how to post pics here (and find a way to carve out more free-time for this great site!)

Mark,

Sorry for just saying Sox. I meant the Red ones, not the white ones My bad.

Your Reds pennant sounds great and would love to see it.

Most of the guys on here have seen my Red Sox pennants but if you want to take a look, they're in this earlier thread

http://www.network54.com/Forum/567138/thread/1191300147/last-1192242420/Any+suggestions

Welcome and please post some of your stuff. Would love to see it.

Greg

Thanks Greg... I should have read more carefully. I do actually have a killer oversized Red Sox Pennant from the teens. Different than all of those pictured in the previous thread, too.

If someone can tell me how to get pictures on this #### thing, I would be happy to post a few. Thanks again!

Mark, what I do to put photos on here is to upload my photos onto my album at www.photobucket.com, then I copy and paste the html address of the photo directly into the message.

My first attempt at posting a picture... Here's probably my finest Red Sox Pennant. Huge oversized version from the teens (NRMT!!) Really vibrant colors when you see it live... sorry for the lousy pic!

Many thanks again to Greg and Keith for helping me figure out the picture posting procedure!

Here is a really fun Red Sox Pennant from the early '50s. For some reason, you NEVER see this variation. I have another that is similar... maybe better, but it is buried for now. They must have really under-produced this one at the time. I just don't understand why these never turn up. I would think that Sox fans would have loved this "Batting Sock" logo...

My best recent pick-up... a 1913 World Series Pennant. The artwork on this one is almost hypnotizing, with Ben Franklin and the Giant in a friendly confrontation. Probably made for Giants fans, as their mascot seems to be the primary focus. Too bad that Philly got the better of them in this one!

Here is one of my all-time favorites. Can you imagine any player today being so popular that they name the entire team after him? Does anyone out there think the "Mannys" can overcome their deficit to beat the "Naps" this weekend? Who will ultimately face the "Hollidays" in this year's World Series?

This thread reminds me of why I don't primarily collect cards in little plastic tombs

I've scrolled down this thread three of four times already and these things are all just beautiful.
You can just imagine seeing these things sold at the ballpark and being waved on little canes.

Love that pennant of yours too, Daniel. While I don't know squat about football pennants, it's cool to see a Philly collection spanning over the years. Thanks for posting. Max, you have fantastic taste in furniture.

Hope these guys are cheering from above for tonight's game

Greg:

Almost looks like those pennants were superimposed into the picture. My brain just can't fathom that these were once commonplace!

For the record, I agree about the little tombs assessment... there is something very wrong with vintage treasures demonstrating Bar Codes. Those are two paths that just should not cross!

Jim, not one but three of those huge pennants. You've gotta be kidding me. I like that Bubbles Hargrave bat too.

The last couple days around here we've definatley seen some museum quality pieces. Thanks for sharing everybody.

Jim,

Your collection is amazing. The BF2s look great. I don't know much about pennants, but was wondering if the large player pennants were also made by Ferguson? Do they have an ACC # (i.e. BF?)? Thanks for sharing!

Mark,

I believe you and I have butted heads more than a few times on some Indians pennants on eBay. Great stuff, and thanks for sharing.

I think the last time I saw an example of the Naps/Lajoie pennant offered was by Leland's about 10-12 years ago. At the time I it was way out of my price range. I wish now I had taken out a loan.

I posted this recently in another thread. One of my favorite Indians items. From 1916:

I always thought this depicted Earl Averill:

I was thrilled when I picked up the first version of this. And then to find another?

I'm not holding my breath on an Eric Wedge/2007 Indians version being produced:

Shawn, The prize pennants were a premium offered by Ferguson Bakery, I do not believe they are listed in the ACC, but can be found in the Standard Catalog.

Hey Rob... That is amazing with the 2 Satchel Paige's. All your pieces are just beautiful. Please email me at imstroft@yahoo.com, just in case you are toying with the idea of selling/trading one of the Paige Pennants.

I have LOTS of unique Cleveland stuff for potential trade.

While not Cleveland, below is a picture of my BIGGEST Pennant. I pictured it next to a regular-sized pennant, just to demonstrate the size... it's a monster!

Dan: I was just a kid in the late '60s when the pennant bug bit me. My Dad would typically buy me a Pennant for $1.00 each time we went to a Reds game at Crosley Field.

Then, in 1969, something terrible happened. The artistry disappeared, the pennants became stiff instead of soft, and the "powers that be" had to include the mass-produced MLB Logo on everything. It made me realize that pride of workmanship was something to be appreciated, and I have been building the vintage collection ever since.

Safe to say, it has become an obsession over the years. I would love to do a Coffee-table Book some day, and really feel (like many others) that memorabilia is way undervalued, compared to the more common cards.

I am so glad that many people on this site seem to love and appreciate the same things as me. Hope more people can continue to share their great pennants as well... thanks!!

Mark, I thought that Boston pennant of yours looked familiar. It's actually pictured in a small BoSox memorabilia book Called Boston Red Sox Memories and Memorabilia of New England's Team by Chadwick and Spindel. It's a cute little book, but not one that goes into a lot of depth. In fact, they incorrectly label that pennant of yours from the 40s which it is obviously wrong. They also show the common red WS Champions pennant and the white 1915 Red Sox pennant as well as another 1912 "Red Sox American League Champions" pennant similar to mine, but with a batter, not a pitcher.

Keep those pennants coming. Great stuff

I hate to bring down the quality of this post because those are some amazing pieces but these have been in the garage forever and I'm wondering about the approximate year of issue. I don't have a clue about them. Also, are they pretty common ones? They are all full size. Thanks,

Rob, it's the bottom of the 4th.

I need some karma for the Sox.

It's not a pennant (ran out of those), but I'm pulling out the big guns

Edited at midnight to say

Rob, those Indians are a great team and should be very proud of what they did this year
