Default PSA "VG 4"?

Posted By: Mark Evans

Not intended as criticism...merely an inquiry. EBay item # 5218263970 appears to be slabbed "VG 4." Did PSA at one time apply the "VG" designation to both 3's and 4's, or is the label in error? Thanks.

I would guess a labeling error. However, it looks like an early label and its possible that the designation assigned to each numerical grade has changed over the years. I checked the cert number on psa's website and its a legit number.

....but here's the link

the label is from psa's very early days. i can't comment on a psa 4 being vg...that is weird.
but i will say i have seen cards with that label that have had major "issues".

VERY early on PSA had a different grading system and VG was a 4. I had a Gehrig with this designation back in 91-92 maybe. They crossed it over to a VG-EX 4. They used to have some intermediate lower grade instead of a VG-EX.

Was it:

1 = Poor
2 = Fair
3 = Good
4 = Very Good?

Yes, and a PSA 5 back then was a "RRVGWSOT"

(Really really very good with sugar on top)

has the funky "0" with the / thing going. I hadn't realized that they initially split poor and fair and only later threw them together to open space for vg-ex. I guess the jump from vg to ex was too big a gap.
