Default Honus Wagner - The Flying Dutchman

While I tend to agree with their general theme and conclusions, I am sick of looking at threads about PWCC and card doctoring. Lets look at some cards!

According to Wikipedia, the great Ty Cobb once regarded Wagner as "maybe the greatest star ever to take the diamond." No further description is needed for this baseball (and baseball card) icon. Show your Wagners!

Absolutely amazing eye candy in this thread! Jay, your M101 back run is my favorite - I can only dream about getting this far with my M101 WaJo back run! It appears to me that SGC has incorrectly identified a couple of your cards as being 1917 issues. Ryan, I agree that the Altoona Tribune is special, but to me, Jay's Mall Theatre card of Hans is even more special.

Thanks Val! It has been fun to put together and it is not finished yet. I agree with you and Ryan that the Tribune and Mall Theatre cards are special. However, my favorite is the Wares since the store was very close to where I grew up in the Bronx. Also, if you remember The Dick Van Dyke Show, fictional characters Rob and Laura Petrie (Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore) lived in New Rochelle.

That headless Wagner is wild, and I especially love how they put the card in a smaller gasket, as if that was the normal size of the card..

Such great cards in this thread. Jeff L., that "Two of a Kind" PC with Ty and Honus is great - and so tough to find.

I don't own many Honus cards but somehow I can post one that hasn't been up yet -

Side question - has anyone ever seen a Honus Virginia Extra?

Really enjoy seeing the awesome variety of Honus Wagner cards in this thread. Here is another postcard for the virtual collection, from the 1908 American League Publishing set. I love that this postcard combines a great batting pose along with Horner's famous portrait of Wagner.

The "Pat Herbst, Cigars" overprint is the only one that I have ever seen. I guess that it can be considered a tobacco card. LOL

Type 1 of Honus rubbing down a 1912 model "spit ball bat". Prior to his 1947 season as a coach.

Apologies for the poorly taken image.

Without any…let me rephrase…with very few tobacco cards issued of the Flying Dutchman, you can see that this thread is much more devoid of cards versus the Ty Cobb thread.

I would think that the dearth of cards available of Hans probably accounts for his relatively higher prices. I know that Wagner is a glaring hole in my “rookie” collection. I’m still holding out for an affordable NCP or M101-1.

Derek:

Affordable used to mean $10K. Nowadays mid 5-figures. I'm still looking for one of those as well.

I used to have 2 M101-1's at different times as well as an 1896 Paterson team photo button issued by Whitehead & Hoag.

I paid $82.5k for my M101–1 graded BVG 2.5. I think it’s a $250k item in the future as the collecting/investing community continues to accept supplements as potential rookie pieces or “cards”. And, if/when PSA slabs these, look out. See what’s happened to M101-2 since PSA started slabbing them

Michael, that is a great piece
