Default Downs T206

Scored this on ebay today.
My low grade collection is now at 45.
I like Downs because of his notoriety with robbing the jewelry store
I am starting to collect the more "interesting" T206 players like this guy and Hal Chase rather than just any card that pops up in my price range. Makes the set more fun for me.

That's a good way to collect the set. Look into:
Turkey Mike Donlin
Sleepy Bill Burns
Frank Bowerman
Geroge McQuillian
Boss Schmidt
Heinie Zimmerman
Bugs Raymond
Rube Kroh
Dan McGann
Chick Gandil
Jean Dubuc
Cicotte
McLean
and Dolly Stark for some others.

I have Zimmerman and Boss Schmidt because of their stories I will go get out the T206 Players book and check out those other guys. Thanks!

Default Case scenario....

I have an interesting thought on where and why the top is missing.

In 1932, before robbing the jewelry store, he remembered that damn T206 in his pocket in which he wrote the address to the store on the top white border. Not wanting that evidence on him, he cleanly cut it off........the store owner found the card on the ground outside after the robbery.

He instantly recognized the mug on the card (albeit, a younger version!) and Mr. Downs was in effect "Down for the Count!"

This could have happened.....?!?!?!? In my dreams!

Peace, Mike

Your dogs playing poker might not have been painted by Rembrandt but I enjoy them as much as any Rembrandt I have seen.

Got my Downs today! Love it! (love all my cards). The background is a near match for the Ritter card I already had.
You know as much as my collector lust makes me want to collect OJ I have to admit there is scarcely a set out there more beautiful than the humble T206.

Back in his day he is what would have been called a "rounder"

I picked up Sleepy Bill the other day and a Turkey Mike (seated) this morning It's hard for me to collect all five hundred cards but if I concentrate on the "bad boys" from the book it makes it more interesting as I go along.
