Default W-UNC Grove and Pennock

Posted By: Bob Lemke

A reader has asked for help in identifying three types of cards he has. They stumped me. Any ideas? Here's the first. They measure about 1-9/16" x 2-3/4", blank-backed. The borders look to wide to be cut-down 4-on-1s. They are sepia on cream. They almost have to be 1934, based on the teams.

The same picture of Grove is used on the 1977 Rowe Exhibit 4/1's shown below. The size of Grove's picture of the Rowe card is 1 1/4 by 2 3/8 inches. The color of the card above does not match the Rowe card and I have never seen the Rowe exhibits in a different color than the yellow below.

The Grove image above does not appear on the 1929-30, 1931-32, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937 or 1938 Exhibit 4/1's. I can't speak for the 1933 Exhibit 4/1, though, since I don't have one.

Grove was traded from the Athletics to the Red Sox sometime between the end of 1933 season and the beginning of the 1934 season. I don't know the exact date of the trade.

IMO Brad got it, it is a cut Rowe Exhibit. The postcard sized cards were designed in 1977, and the cut cards you have are exactly the same. The color is not yellow, Ive only seen a few of the Rowe cards and all have been yellow that I remember. Pennock is listed in the Rowe set as a Red Sox, so Im sure thats what they are. Most vintage sets will show Pennock as a Yankee. He played for Sox from 1915-22, and as a reliever in his last year 1934.

PS. There is at least 1-2 of the Rowe 4-in-1 cards a year on eBay advertised as a "Rare uncataloged Exhibit card". They always seem to be yellow though.
