Besides cards, I collect books (or likely vice versa), mostly baseball, but other first editions



After age and 2 torn achilles tendons, I have traded in a soft outside, poor inside basketball game (highlighted by a 0.7 ppg average in university), for a game where I can glide and coast



I also am a supporting of University of British Columbia baseball, and have an interest in art.

i have a '63 impala that i keep looking like new. I also keep my ancient Greek up to date doing a little translating and
etymologies here and there.
raising a mixed german shepherd and 'weiner dog' also keeps us busy---

Surfing, skateboarding (still skating pools at 44), scuba diving, photography without a client sitting over my shoulder telling to make sure the label reads, coaching little league, travel (mostly South Pacific and Africa the last few years), fighting a losing battle with termites for control of my house, and lately, cabinetry.

Ben was not a student of mine. Although I studied the history of Western phil as an undergrad, my research and teaching is all in Asian philosophy and primarily Indo-Tibetan Buddhist thought these days. I do have a small collection of antique Tibetan manuscripts and painted scrolls (thangkas).

Sounds like we have a similar passion for Jazz and Jazz on vinyl. Compared to my jazz guru, a friend named Greg who has about 3,000 jazz lps, I feel like a rookie, but compared to most I think I have a decent collection, including some rarities. My personal highlights are original pressings of both the 1st and 2nd Editions of John Coltrane's "Ascension" lp. Big Band Free Jazz - What more could you ask for?

lately it's been koine since i've been looking at bit at the johannine literature.
when i do my medical terminology mini-course or pick up some of the old
socrates dialogues, i get my classical greek going again.

I used to be a really bad pack rat, anything shiney, it was going home with me. I've been able to keep my focus on just baseball cards for about 2 years now. I bowl 2 nights a week. I am a wanna be remix DJ doing a lot of my own remixes of songs that ineterest me. My favorite thing to do is to figure out what loops were ripped in current popular songs and then remixing them with the original song they took the loop from. My best friend has over 2000 CDs, so usually has whatever I am looking for. I also create techno ambient sounds and will also have fun ripping lines from various TV shows. I've done remixes of Beavis & Butthead, Speed racer, etc. I also like to take slower songs, add a bass beat, some effects and speed them to a more disco speed. A friend of mine hate the remix of Faith Hill's The Kiss because I sped it form 110bpm to 135bpm.

I like playing board games, escially non-traditional ones. If you like differnt type board games, pick up Settlers of Cataan. This is a great that anyone can learn, but you will never master. My started playing it when he was 4 and we had a regualr at the game and comic store I owned that was in his 70s who would stop in to play a couple of times a week.

I am also big movie fan. I have over 300 dvds and rent at least 3-5 movies a week. I also spend way too much time watching Cartoon Network. I am also a permanent Neilsen household, so you can blame me for all the wierd programming that stays on the air since I don't watch any major network TV.

There is lots of stuff I used to do when I younger.

Riding Harleys with my wife -when it's above 50*. Spending two vacations a year on Cocoa Beach. Raising Hell with our new baby granddaughter. On my four days off, answering alarms for the overtime, to pay for this crazy hobby and the kids' college.

Darren- I was born in raised in Walker (near Baton Rouge). Being in the Navy keeps me far from home now but I do enjoy the leave time I get when I can go back and visit.

Genaro- I haven't had a chance to shoot that one yet. I'm sure I'll run across one sooner or later and give it a try at the range. It's hard getting to shoot as much now because I live in CT and their gun control laws are a little more strict than in the south. Plus, I'm moving to Italy in a couple of days and you don't even want to know about gun laws in Europe! I had to leave all my guns w/ the parents back home. At least that gives me a break to from paying for guns and I can focus more on the card collection. Why did I have to pick such expensive hobbies???!!!

Ah yes, Kata Johannine. I studied it in high school (Jesuit educated, also a Louisiana boy). He actually speaks Latin (mostly to himself, but still).

I'm visiting Greece this summer, but I don't know a word of modern Greek yet. I imagine a lot's changed in the past couple of millennia.

We go to Greece often to visit my relatives near Athens.
But, then we take off for the Aegean Islands, and I highly
recommend Crete, Rhodes, and especially Santorini.

Santorini is a crescent shaped Island which is the rem-
nants of possibly the largest volcanic explosion in re-
corded history. The Island "blew" 3500 years ago and the
resulting tidal waves devasted all the civilizations in
the Eastern Mediterrean back then. In recent years they
have un-earthed an advanced civilization on this Island
that many historians believe is Atlantis.

You must go there by boat, for when you enter the 15 mile
wide harbor, you will be looking up at ancient volcanic
cliffs 1000 ft high. It is one of the most awesome sites
on this earth.

The Greeks for the most part speak pretty good English,
so you will have no problem there.

Crete is incredible. I've been there a few times and I love it.... he's right, they do speak English very well there. I don't know a lick of Greek (ancient or not) and I've never had a problem.

I pretty much got out of early cards in 1974 when I bought my first 1962 Corvette---I've since had 66 Corvettes and still have 13 of them--back into cards and cars. I'm 59, play softball twice a week, with the young 20-30's guys on Monday, in a 55 and older league on Wednesdays. It's fun to go from being a slow old gluy to a speed burner in a little over 36 hours!Have 4 daughters--2 youngest play NCAA Div. 1 volleyball--now that I'm not chasing around the country to see them play, have some time for the cards again.

Barry A., thanks. My doctoral work is actually in evolutionary psychology and mechanisms of human mate selection, but I studied ancient Greek for four years and it was always one of my favorite subjetcs.

I collect cardboard pictures of mostly dead baseball players. I try to keep about 800 guys and girls focused on talking about those pieces of cardboard with as much leniency as possible, while still maintaining some modicum of reasoning, on a public chatboard. I usually interact with the family around that. At night I like to doze off on the couch and drool on myself. In the summer I like to ride around on my Kubota tractor while pushing dirt, on our small parcel of land, around our house... Fairly exciting existence....

On the collecting front my other interest is travel decals from the 1950's. I am trying to complete my collection of Miss America series decals --just 5 short so if anyone else collects these please let me know . I love to travel to major sporting events --been to three Olympics ( really going through a time missing this one !!) all the major tennis tournaments-French U.S. and Wimbledon ( except Australian open which is still on my list) and a couple of World Series and Super Bowls. Looking forward to the Final 4 in Indiannapolis this year my 5th Final 4.

I have a variety of interests, but the only real hobby of note is
that I play recorder in a small classical music group (the wooden
instrument, not the tape recorder). Similar to most book clubs,
the group is about half music, half social, and it is a requirment
the person hosting the practice provide coffee.

I've never really thought of anything I do as a hobbies. They're just
things I do then an outsider labels them as your hobby.
