T206 Managers /Who would you want to play for?

1. Frank Chance
I’m thinking I would have loved to play under Frank Chance. I think he had the respect of his players. I think of the 116 games won in a season and four pennants in five years.

2. John McGraw
10 NL pennants between 1905-24; won 3 World Series (1905, 21-22); 2nd on all-time career list with 2,866 wins in 33 seasons. I think he was Charles Barkley before there was a Charles Barkley. Love his Quotes.

3. Bill Carrigan
Rough Carrigan guided his team to second place his first year while guiding a young rookie named Babe Ruth then wins 2 World Series and walks away from baseball till 1927. From all accounts he was a fine manager but was burned out by many players behavior including Ruth. He also didn’t like Harry Frazee. Although he never went back to the World Series upon his return to baseball I wonder how great he may have been if he had never left at all.

4. Jack Barry
Had to follow up and take the Red Sox to the 1918 World Series. Imagine Harry Hooper led the regulars on the team with a 289. BA and A pitcher and platoon player Babe Ruth led the team with 11 HRs and as a team the sox only hit 15 the whole year. When I look at the lineup its amazing what Jack Barry did with that team. A total team batting average of 249. A World Series Winner with a 249 BA Hard to believe although the team era of 2.41 had a lot to do with it.

Well Just a opinion I could be wrong.

1918 Red Sox and Jack Barry

Ruth's 11 HR's led the league.
The 15 team homeruns were third behind two teams with 22 and 20.
The .249 was only 5 points below the league average.
They led the league in the least amount of runs allowed.

When you put it in perspective, winning the league is not that big of a deal with those stats or am I missing something?

I WOULD PLAY FOR MCGRAW!!!!

I was just amazed that a 1st year manager won a tight race. Cleveland and Washington were right there to the last week of the season. Cleveland batted 261. 12 points higher and Washington's team era was 2.14. Hey Ozzie impressed me this year and I am amazed at what he did in his first year.

McGraw's management technique includes: micromanagement, intimidation and abuse. Captain Frisch left the Giants because of this.

Id play for Mack, eventhough his t206 has not yet been revealed.

I hear it has a Hustler back, but I don't believe it. I think it is a Cobb back.

Since athletes get bigger, stronger and faster every year. I have always wondered this. I was drafted out of high school and played minor league ball for 6 years.

I was 5'10" 185 lb at 18.
I had an arm rating for an outfielder at 94 ( out of 100)
I ran the 60 in 6.3...Dion Sanders ran it in 6.2
i could hit a fastball out of sight, batting and throwing left gave me one step closer to first.
I hit career .269 in the minors.

If i had been born in 1880 with these skills, would I have been a sure fired major leaguer and maybe a great one?

The question was which one would I have played for? I woulda played for anyone of them and gladly.

BTW...I couldn't hit a curve or back door slider to save my life. If I got ahead in the count and could look for a fast ball, I looked real good.

Darren beat me to mentioning Miller Huggins. I was surprised that until now
Huggins had not been mentioned. He was a "little guy" who had to manage a lot
of "big guys". How effective was he ? We'll never know, since he managed what
most BaseBall historians agree to be the greatest collection of ballplayers that
one team has ever assemled.

But, for my bucks, though, I would choose McGraw.....he, too, was a little
guy....but with a very big ego....and he was a "mean dude".....so mean, he
refused to play the Boston (AL) team in the 1904 World Series (because he
said they were unworthy); and then, declared his Giants the "World Champions".

Although they are not in the T206 set, I'd choose Connie Mack and Miller Huggins. Jennings is out, who wants to play on the same team as Cobb? Playing for Hal Chase would have been a trip.
