Default T206 Matty ....white cap vs dark cap

Posted By: anthony

I was recently searching ebay (go figure) for matty images and cards and saw a bunch of t206s. I used to own all three versions but never found out exactly why the "white" cap is more $ than the "dark" cap. It is more scarce? I personally like the "dark" cap over the "white" cap.

3 questions.

1. Why it more scarce if that is the reason?

2. Why doesnt the "white" version have NY on his sleeve?

3. Which of the 2 do you prefer?

...That the white cap is somewhat scarcer since the dark cap was one of the six "super prints," i.e. printed with much more frequency. The six super prints are Red Cobb, Blue portrait Chase, dark cap chase, yellow chance and evers chicago on shirt, if memory serves me.

But I agree that the dark cap is the better specimen.

As to why the NY in one but not the other? Purely artistic discretion.

and therefore, a lot more available than the White Cap.

The Dark Cap Matty was printed with 20+ different backs (from Piedmont to DRUM).

The White Cap Matty is a 1st Series card that was printed with at most 10 different backs.

The usual law of "supply vs demand" sets the price on these two T206's. Hence, the White Cap version
being more expensive.

Is it just me or do we see more white cap Matty's today than we did lets say 3-5 years ago.
Still I prefer the white cap version much more than the dark cap. To each his own......

To Paul and Ted's accurate assessment I would only add that beyond a larger NUMBER of backs, Matty Dark Cap underwent a full print run with many of the MOST COMMON backs--further distancing Matty Dark Cap from Matty White Cap in terms of distribution.
